Scottish-born Bill Hay, who came to the U.S. in 1909 to study violin, got his start in radio in Hastings, Neb., in 1922.
Hay first met Amos 'n' Andy, then known as Sam and Henry, in 1926, when he was the station manager of WGN in Chicago. He announced their first show and moved with them when they went to another Chicago station, WMAQ.
His soft Scotch accent and cheery "Heah they ah" sent Amos 'n' Andy on their way to millions of radio listeners.
