Radio personality Dick Haynes was a morning listening habit for many Southern Californians for three decades.

Haynes and his program, "Haynes at the Reins," started at KLAC in 1946, but left about 10 years later when a change of format was implemented at the station. At radio station KFOX in Long Beach, Haynes was voted top country air personality of the year in 1969.

Haynes returned for his latest stint at KLAC when the station gave up talk radio in 1970 to become the Southland's top dispenser of country and western music.

He also had had minor roles in film and television throughout his career, including an appearance on "The Andy Griffith Show."

Dick would occasionally play a parody of the signature song of Dick Haymes, "Let the Rest of the World Go By." I recall that it began, "To a party I did go, Where the gowns were cut low, Held up by but a single strap. One lady wore a dress, Captivating I'll confess, For it was made up of a worldly map. On the front was Brazil, On the back, Bunker Hill..." Several verses described the dress's various parts, using double entendres. The punchline ending went,"On one knee was Siam, On the other, Alabam, but I never got a look at her thigh; For just then I spied my wife, and so, to save my life, I let the rest of the world go by." It was rolling-on-the-ground funny, and I have to have a recording of it. HELP!

Dick Haynes was my grandmother's brother (my great uncle) My Dad was named after him & inherited his wit & love of music & people. I think he most certainly deserves the walk of fame as he was a pioneer in the field of entertainment by radio in Hollywood. Betty White was his first secretary & Mickey Rooney his best friend. He was kind & generous & always quick with a joke.
He used to send me autographed pictures of the stars I enjoyed and would answer endless questions I had about "who's who" His wife, Bobby, was by his side constantly & supported his every career move. I loved watching him pop up in the corn field on HEE HAW as a special guest. My little sister & I would scream with excitement when we'd recognize it was him. He was a great man & a great radio star!
