Jack Douglas

Born April 26, 1927

Jack Douglas was an early producer and host of travel and adventure films on television. Douglas felt that people would like to explore the world via the small rectangular eye in their living rooms.

Almost all the travel-adventure shows on television sprang from the original Douglas format, which started with the true-adventure series, "I Search for Adventures," spread through Golden Voyage, Kingdom of the Sea, Bold Journey and Seven League Boots.

Douglas also produced "Keyhole," which he once described as a "documatic" — a dramatized documentary. "Keyhole" covered diverse subjects like aspiring actors, female judo experts, skydivers in action, a handler of poisonous snakes and a tour of the French Riviera.

    Five thoughts about Jack Douglas

Hello; My dad would be so proud (though he was a very modest man) of being recognized like this. One correction though, he passed more like in 1997 or '98. One misconception about him was that he traveled all over the world. The fact was he hated being away from our mom Kit. His production staff did the photography, the editors would do their thing and then he'd host and narrate each episode. He was a grand showman and a great father. Does he deserve a star? YOU BET HE DOES! I would love to know who was behind him receiving it. Thank you so much to whomever you are! God Bless, JD

I was a producer-cameraman-director on a two-man crew, of which there were about four other two-man crews on Jack's most important TV series, "AMERICA", a prime time NBC weekly series shown throughout America around 8pm, for one full season.

You did not even mention that NBC prime time show!.

Today, 9/16/11, Googling was very difficult to find Jack even mentioned till I found this page.

I made "A NEW LOOK AT NEW ORLEANS" "WHEN IN TEXAS" I forget the title of the one on New Mexico, and I think one or two others.

It would seem that you should find out how to get Jack to come up a number of times when googling his name on line -- by how ever (placing them) that is done; then go back for a star on the walk in Hollywood with the on-line mentions.

I will probably be mentioning the assignment in the autobiography I am writing since some funny things took place on the assignment, IE my assistant made a joking remark about "Handle these film boxes with care or thy will explode", and what the airport manager told us the next time we came in to ship exposed film back to Jack back in Hollywood. The AMERICA shows are listed in an old resume that I used to use in the (Ithink) '60s). Bill Dewar

I am a doctoral student and am writing about Jack Douglas and his travel programs as part of my dissertation. If either of the commenters above would be willing to discuss Douglas and his work with me, please contact me at athim85@gmail.com. I'd really appreciate the opportunity to learn more about him and his process.

Thank you to those of you that took the time to post your remarks. In re reading Cecil Smith's piece he made an incorrect description of the "Keyhole" series. Keyhole was in fact about a real life private detective and the cases he was working. It was unlike anything he had ever done, meaning non-travel oriented. If I recall correctly the show ran into some legal problems. Some people didn't care for being photographed coming out of a motel room with a mistress or boyfriend...imagine that!!!
