Joe Penner was a radio, television and film comedian who was known as "the duck salesman" for his famed "Wanna-buy-a-duck" gag that caught on in the popular vernacular. Another phrase from his performances also caught on: "You nasty man!"

Penner's early career was spent in carnivals, burlesque and vaudeville before he got his first break — a job in the Greenwich Village Follies in 1926. He made his first radio appearance on the Rudy Vallee program in 1933 and was an immediate success. Four weeks later he was given a show of his own and won popularity the first year.
