Starring in the early Fox TV cop series “21 Jump Street” proved the ideal jumping-off point for sexy rebel Johnny Depp, who went on to become one of Hollywood’s most successful and original actors.
On screen, Depp is best known for his idiosyncratic portrayals of a string of true-life characters (including director Ed Wood, undercover FBI agent Donnie Brasco, author J.M. Barrie, gangster John Dillinger) as well as such fictional eccentrics as Edward Scissorhands, Don Juan, Ichabod Crane, Captain Jack Sparrow in the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd and the Mad Hatter.
Off screen, Depp has gained attention for his many celebrity romances, his eclectic hair and clothing styles, his standout cheekbones and an array of storied tattoos. The high school dropout and musician also hit the headlines several times for unruly public behavior and a few brash remarks that were considered “anti-American.”
Depp, who has been nominated for three lead actor Oscars and eight Golden Globes (one win for “Sweeney Todd”), has enjoyed an enduring relationship with visionary director Tim Burton, with whom he’s collaborated on seven films.
The actor has two children, Jack and Lily-Rose, with his longtime girlfriend, French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis.
