Phil Spitalny was a bandleader whose all-girl orchestra charmed the nation during the era of big bands. His band performed from 1934 to 1957 and was a frequent entertainment feature at military bases during World War II.
He auditioned more than 1,000 girls to find the 30 who launched his orchestra on the stage of New York's Capitol Theater. It set the style use for more than a decade on a radio program called "Hour of Charm."
He married his concert master, Evelyn Kaye, in 1946. Professionally she was billed as "Evelyn and her magic violin."
