A native Australian, Simon Baker first gained notice in 1997 playing a struggling actor in "L.A. Confidential," which also featured fellow countrymen Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce. That role led to several other films, including "The Affair of the Necklace," "Red Planet, "Sunset Strip," "Judas Kiss" and "Love From Ground Zero." Baker was also part of the cast in Ang Lee’s 1999 western "Ride With the Devil," which starred Tobey Maguire and Jewel.
His first leading role in a network TV series was in CBS’ "The Guardian," which ran from 2001 through 2004. Baker played Nick Fallin, a hardened corporate attorney sentenced to work as a legal advocate for children after being found guilty of drug possession.
Baker’s GQ-ready looks and easy charm landed him roles in two romantic comedies in 2006. In "The Devil Wears Prada," he played writer Christian Thompson, who seduces a fashion magazine staffer played by Anne Hathaway. "Something New" starred Baker as a landscaper smitten by an uptight African American attorney played by Sanaa Lathan. He also co-starred in the short-lived CBS drama "Smith," playing a coldblooded hit man.
The actor has found his biggest success with his starring role on CBS’ "The Mentalist," playing Thomas Jane, a onetime psychic turned crime investigator. The series debuted in 2008 and has consistently been one of the network’s most popular dramas. Baker has scored a Golden Globe nomination and an Emmy nomination for his portrayal.
Baker’s other films include "Sex and Death 101," "The Killer Inside Me," "Margin Call" and "Land of the Dead."
