Smilin' Ed McConnellEd McConnell's genial storytelling brought joy, wonder and laughter to children for more than three decades. His "Smilin' Ed's Gang" program, which began on radio in 1943 and moved to television in 1951, was believed to have been the oldest sponsored show on air at the time of his death in 1954. He died of an apparent heart attack aboard his boat moored near his Newport Beach home. Because he had pre-taped most of the shows for the upcoming season, his program continued for a time after his death. |

Two thoughts about Smilin' Ed McConnell
Smilin' Ed was my grandfather. My mother, Mary 'Jane' Cozart, was his beloved daughter. Her last words as she laid on her bed was she was ready to "go home to see my brother, Randy and her dad". She was adament that they would both be there waiting for her. My grandfather died while I was only 4 but my mother never let his memory die. She loved her father with a love that will never die. I pray that she got her wish and my brother and grandfather were there towelcome her into heaven.
