Alexis Cardenas, 20

Alexis Cardenas, a 20-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, Oct. 29, in the 10100 block of Virginia Avenue in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Authorities responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at 10:21 p.m. The victim was taken to St. Francis Medical Center where he died in surgery. According to coroner's records, Cardenas was shot in the chest.

Investigators said the homicide was not gang-related. They did not provide additional information about the circumstances of the shooting.

Detectives are pursuing leads in the case, said Det. D. Retzlaff, but they have made no arrests.
