Homicide Report > Andre Gibson, 18
Andre Gibson, 18
Died May 16, 2011
Andre Gibson, an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot Monday, May 16, in the 11000 block of Harris Avenue in Lynwood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Gibson was attempting to burglarize a home when the owner heard his dogs barking outside about 11:10 p.m.
According to sheriff's officials, when the owner went outside to investigate he was accosted by Gibson near the garage. At that point, Gibson allegedly tried to enter the home but the owner got back inside and locked the door, authorities said.
The owner's son, who was staying in a back house, heard the exchange and armed himself with a gun before checking out the situation, sheriff''s officials said.
Officials said Gibson then charged at the son and tried to force his way into the back house. During a struggle, the son of the owner shot Gibson in the chest, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department news release.
Deputies were called and Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:18 p.m.

The right to bear arms... Glad the family is safe.

No disrespect to family, but you reap what you sow. Can you imagine the fear this family felt during this interlude? I'd do the same thing to protect my family, in a heartbeat.

It's not a crazy world; he sounds like he was a crazy male.

Sad stuff someone had to die, someone had to take someones life to defend themselves.. and overall sad for the family who has to put this man to rest.

does'nt this whole story sound strange ? why would he barge into the house knowing that someone was in there . and then tried again to barge into the backhouse . this sounds like a cover up . they have the rights to bare arms but they dont have the right to shoot someone unless they're in their house . and the report does'nt say that Mr. Gibson was armed . this just does'nt make sense to me .
May 25, 2011 at 10:40 a.m.
@ rDoT I feel u...cover up...tryin to barge n the house and the backhouse
May 25, 2011 at 1:34 p.m.
rDot - Ask yourself this.. Why was he there in the first place? They don't know the guy. So why would they want to cover up something. This was clearly an attempted home invasion/robbery. Put yourself in their shoes; would you wait for the suspect to produce a gun and then be inside your house to defend yourself?? I sure know that I wouldn't and I highly doubt you would either.
May 26, 2011 at 9:21 a.m.
I agree with Ceace. Why was he there? He don't live there? It's unfortunate he was killed but he was in the WRONG!
May 26, 2011 at 10:11 p.m.
i was a close friend to Andre . he was running for his life . he was being chased by someone and hid in they ' re backyard . this is a cover up . they didn ' t have the right to shoot Mr . Gibson . even if he was attempting to break in the house . this whole story is bogus . why would he attempt to break into someones house knowing they were there . nobody is dumb enough to do that .
May 27, 2011 at 8:56 a.m.
rDot - how were they supposed to know that? Someone comes onto your property at 11pm, tries to push his way into your house; what would any normal person do? Exactly what they did. Also, what was your friend running from? If you're living right; you have nothing to run from.
May 27, 2011 at 10:35 a.m.
— rDoT ....... how do you know all of this? Were you there as an eyewitness? Have you given your statement to the police?
May 27, 2011 at 10:46 a.m.
rDot said "they didn ' t have the right to shoot Mr . Gibson . even if he was attempting to break in the house"
That is thee most ridiculous thing I've heard. This guy was trying to force his way into their house. They did not know him. For all they knew he was there to harm them. I understand you lost your friend, but I think it's time for you to accept that your friend was up to no good and paided the ultimate price for it.
May 27, 2011 at 11:18 a.m.
ceace-they didnt know . that ' s exactly what ' s wrong . they did ' nt have the right to shoot him . they just jumped to conclusion without knowing what was really happening . hispanics were chasing Gibson and that was the first place he ran . its not safe for black males to walk around late in Lynwood , that was his mistake , but he should ' nt have been shot .
May 28, 2011 at 9:39 a.m.
rDoT,
Why didn't he say anything? Why did he just try to push his way in? I was visiting family right next door (slept over) and there was nothing said by this person that anything was wrong with him. He used a whole bunch of bad words but not once did he say help me or call the cops or anything like that. If he was running for his life that sure was a strange way to get help or to get out of the way. I would think that if my life was on the line I would be yelling help me, they are after me hide me or something like that. But not once was anything said like that.
May 28, 2011 at 11:06 p.m.
— rDoT ... again, how do you know all this. Theres plenty of readers that want to know the details and the reliability of your assertions.
May 29, 2011 at 6:46 a.m.
janna-how can yuh assume all this happened if yuh were nexr door sleep . yuh dont know what words were exchanged during this altercation . yuh guys are all just going by this bogus cover up . they ' re covering up because they know that they didnt have the right to shoot Gibson . he wasn ' t armed and he sure wasnt dangerous .
May 31, 2011 at 1:26 p.m.
rDot - What exactly do you think they are trying to hide? He came onto their property at 11pm at night; you said it yourself it's not safe; so why are they expected to know that your friend was supposedly being chased and didn't have a gun?? I think you're just speaking with emotions and you're not really seeing the big picture. If someone came onto your property, you would do the same.
I feel for you and your friends family. I pray that God will help you through this.

rdot-
You're in denial, my friend. Janna was at a SLEEP OVER. She didn't say she was asleep. You're looking for anything to rationalize you're friend being up at someone else's house late at night that he doesn't know. You sound like you're the one doing the cover up and this janna has basically blown you're " blame the cops" garbage out of the water. Go on, keep making excuses for bad people...usually bad people make excuses for bad people...
May 31, 2011 at 4:52 p.m.
rDoT,
Please, yes I was asleep, but not for everything...there was a lot of noise, people were yelling at one another, all the noise woke me up. Not once in all the words going back and forth did Gibson ever say help me, call the police, someone is after me! Not once! The victim's were yelling at him, they were telling him stuff and he was yelling right back but not once did he say stop, help, or anything that would give anyone the slightest idea that anything was wrong with him or that he needed help. So no Mr. rDoT I do not think he was running from anyone for his life.

No offense to family or friends, but especially in a neighborhood "that's not safe", you can't be just barging into people's homes and expect any different.
I have a family. I will die or kill trying to protect them, and I'm not a killer. What makes them any different?
Sad situation, but cover up???? I don't buy it. I woulda done the same thing.

Andre Gibson was my nephew...i never saw this add & never knew i could leave a comment & so i am doing so now...not sure if anyone will read this but i must say something in defending my nephew's name..he was no robber!!! he truly was running for his life & was merely seeking help...everyone says why didnt he yell, say he needed help...has anyone that said this ever been in the same situation??!! im sure my nephew was scared for his life, not sure exactly how far away the people were who were chasing him..this is a very sad thing that should have never happen...noone deserves to be shot & killed this way...Andre was a young, quiet kid..who even knows if they could hear him say "help" they were too busy grabbing there weapon & becoming trigger happy!! the only way i would say it's okay for someone to shoot someone else is if they produce a weapon themselves! & my nephew did no such thing..instead of being so quick to pull the trigger, they could have wrestled him down, im sure there was men bigger than he was...my nephew was smart, handsome & talented in many ways & that is exactly how we all remember him!!
