Antonio Diaz, 49

Died Sept. 6, 2011

Antonio Diaz, a 49-year-old white man, was shot and killed by police Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the 100 block of West 101st Street in Broadway-Manchester, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officers responded to a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon about 9 p.m., according to a Los Angeles Police Department news release. When police arrived, Diaz's family members told them he had been "involved in a weapon-related assault." They then directed the officers to a detached room in the backyard where they said Diaz was staying.

When police entered the room, Diaz confronted them, officials said. The officers told Diaz to raise his hands, but he allegedly pointed a gun at them instead, police said. At that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Paramedics were called and Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner's records show he suffered several gunshot wounds to the torso and legs.

After the shooting, authorities recovered Diaz's gun, which ended up being a replica of a small-caliber revolver, police said.

No officers were hurt during the incident.

The LAPD's Force Investigation Division will be investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Anyone with information about Diaz's death is asked to call police at (877) LAPD-24-7.Tipsters who would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

We love you dad. I never thought I'd see you like that. It's hard to think we'll never hear your laugh, your jokes, your voice. We're having a hard time accepting that youre gone. your children and grandchildren will miss you very much. Mom is heartbroken and so are grandma and granpa.
I miss you dad.

Where's 'Jag' on this one? I bet the police overreacted on this one too, huh?

Meck,

He'll be here soon. I'm sorry for the family, this is a shame but the police are just doing their job to serve and protect. As I've said before, it really doesn't matter what he was holding. "Drop your replica!!!" isn't part of their dialog and training, but Jag will tell everyone it should be.

RIP

My heart aches for your family. I did not know you nor do I even live in the area but I come onto this site quite often. May your family one day find peace and may you visit them in their dreams....

The classic "he allegedly pointed a gun at them, police said" statement. Meck and mightymike33tm3, stop blogging and go patrol the streets.

They were dispatched to a call of assault with a deadly weapon. Even his own family said he was, "involved in a weapon-related assault." That right there is more than enough to have the police arrive with their guns drawn. Then he doesn't comply with their commands and points a gun at them. What do you want them to do?

Are you traumatized from an expierence or what?

I'm sure the victims family now regret calling the cops. I'm sure they wanted him arrested, but not killed!

I see many killings by cops of persons with mental issues. It also seems that cops should be trained to shoot so not to kill but wound a person. If needed more pistol shooting training must be conducted. Another type of weapon such a low power shotgun style pistol or short rife would would and stop most persons without killing them.

Meck, unlike you and mightymike33tm3 I don't live in the medieval times. Killing a suspect is not the answer. I also don't believe in the death sentence. Do you know how many people that were in deathrow have been released do to DNA? Is in the hundreds.
