Betty McClellan

Betty McClellan, a 62-year-old black woman, died Sunday, June 20, in the 4300 block of West 59th Place in Hyde Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Family members called 911 about 9 a.m. and said they found McClellan and her husband, Hersey McClellan, a 63-year-old black man, dead in a room, said Det. Chris Barling of the LAPD's 77th Street Division.

Authorities were called and husband and wife were pronounced dead at the scene, Barling said.

Investigators believe the shooting was a murder-suicide, in which Hersey shot his wife and then himself. It appears the couple had recent financial trouble, Barling said.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact Dets. Myra Kellum or Lyman Doster at (213) 485-1383.

Betty was a former employee of mine and was one of the nicest people I'd ever met. I am still in shock. I cannot believe she was taken from us in such a brutal manner. Betty, your memory will be with us forever. Rest in Peace.....

Rest in peace. Even though I didn't know Betty Ann, the article mentions financial problems. I suspect the economy. People faced with bills, can't borrow against the house, can't find work to qualify for a loan. It's crazy. Every day Americans are loosing their minds. Afterall, the fastest-growing industry health care?

ShineOn - I agree with you 100 % ... this country is going to hell in a handbasket, and this tragedy could have been prevented. I can only imagine the pain, anger, fear & desperation that this husband was going through when he took his/her life. Murder/suicide is never the answer, obviously ... let's wake up as a nation and help one another through these difficult times. I pray for both his & her souls.

I wonder how many would be alive today if guns weren't so prevalent in our society. It's sad. I wonder if the "guns for everyone" National Rifle Association, wants to comment on these tragic deaths facilitated by the quick and easy method: guns.

They lived just a few blocks away from me, and I NEVER heard about this until now! SMH. Probably lived in that house (which is a nice area full of nice homes) for many years; most residents have. Probably raised their children and played with their grandkids in that house. Such a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to their family.

Such an ignorant comment should not be dignified with a reply.

This is what happened to the family:

Two Nigerian fraudsters, whose global £2.7m scam had deadly consequences for one family they mercilessly ripped off, were jailed today.
Police identified a total of thirteen victims all over the world, who each lost an average of £207,000, after the duo convinced them they were due an Australian lottery pay-out, inheritance, investment benefit or were sold non-existent heavy plant machinery.
Obinnam Nwokolo, 37, of 20 Chesworth Close, Erith, who amassed a valuable property portfolio in the UK and Nigeria, received six years and four months and Uchechhukwu Onuoha, 40, of Aspen Green, Erith, who entered this country on a student visa, received five years and two months.
Both pleaded guilty at Croydon Crown Court to conspiracy to defraud between October 1, 2008 and September 15 last year.
One of their victims, Betty McClellan, 62, of Hyde Park, Los Angeles was shot dead by her husband Hersey McClellan, 63, who then shot himself on June 20, 2010 after she wired £264,000 — blowing the couple’s hard-earned pension.
