KTLA Video: Jewelry Store Owner Shoots Would-Be Robbers

31 reader comments about Brandon Lincoln
Brandon Lincoln thought he was going to go into the jewelry store with his two other buddies and do a quick robbery. What an idiot, what was he going to do with the cash or jewelry? Pawn it? Sell it? Wear it? The store owner shot Mr Lincoln and his two other co robbers when they were sticking the store owner up. I know at the age of 20 back in 2002 I was scrubbing toilets and and cleaning classrooms as a custodian at a milldle school not robbing people and gettting myself killed

562ver not everyone wants to work the looong hours and then wait for the pay... like u n me(or mooost citizens lol). now well things are so changed that I believe Mr. Lincoln got realll mix-up with the wrong crowd, but he did have a choice, he chose wrong soo sorry to know he was sooo young, and he could have done something real good with his life. Now Mr. Rios, he was real prepared because not even a month before the shoothing some other people had tried to rob him and to make things worse, a few years back, Mr. Rios and his brother got robbed to make it even worse Mr. Rios brother got shot and died (not at the same location, but yes it was in wilmington). Tell me how you would u react to all this? I think I would sell something with less temptetion lol. I have worked for good pay and yes for even $8 an hour and so what!!!! I feel good when I spend my hard earned pennies and don't tell God u want a J.O.B even if it is scrubbing toilets because God will give it to u..lol God gave me one too, but I did learned something from that experience....

I'm sure that no PARENT/GUARDIAN/ or BLOOD relative ever thougth or even planned that when a Son grew up, became an ADULT at an early age of 20, he would go robbing any one at any place ever, I'm so sad for who ever was a sister or brother to BRANDON, see he even had a good name, why on earth he went to that for? Now who ever took care of him as a baby is empty handed! Sorry for you all that I'm sure did care for him I know that all I wanted for my own is for them to have a real good life, to be some what better that what I have done, violence is killing all our hopes and dreams and hopes for a better future. May the Lord, our savior have mercy upon our children who will be on earth much longer than we. I want to say again, no one wants to see our young ones die not even of any kind of cancer or any accident I'm sure some one is hurting for his stupid way of acting. Sory for your loss.

Keep up the comments 562vert.
I love your perspective on the happenings in LA county. You seem to have a unique perspective on the culture and street mentality.
You're a cut above the rest!

First of all, he was 18 years old, not 20. In fact he just turned 18 a few months ago. No, he did not get mixed up in the wrong crowd. He was raised without parental support by our county system. When raised in the system, it makes it VERY difficult for these teenagers to enter into adulthood and obtain simple things like a job. Without an ID or a social security card, let alone without a home and having to resort to squatting with homies. This is the result of our current system. So sad. He was a kid who had child-like dreams that will never be fulfilled. Brandon, if I ever go to Hawaii, I will think of you.

The owner of the jewelry store did what he had to do. I'm interested on what the outcome of this is incident is going to be. Is the DA going file charges against the owner for killing the robbery suspect?
Aug. 26, 2010 at 10:29 a.m.
thanks@mark.. as for none's comments , we all know right from wrong and by the time we get into our teens you better start following the program or you will be dead or in prison. One of my best friends was in and out the foster system and he went to a jr college then went on to cal st domingez and got his degree and now a family man with a house and cool job. If he couldn't do the school stuff he could have picked up a wrench, he could have went to the millitary, he made the choice not his two buddies, he messed up now he is dead, no courts no prison costs,I wonder how many other people he and the other goons robbed

The majority of children that grow up without a positive parental influence have some form of contact with the criminal justice system. Lack of parenting or guardianship is the number one reason why poverty and crime continue to be so high today. Stop having babies if you can’t take care of them and raise them to be productive members of society. The system already fails us and we don’t need to help it by failing ourselves. I was raised in a single parent household with a mother that had me at 16 and she stayed on me so I wouldn’t end up a statistic in a low income area. Instead of investing in your kids Jordan’s, Xboxes and other stuff that doesn’t matter, teach them how to read!!! Education is the fundamental necessity to break this vicious cycle. I get so sick of reading about young black men that never stood a chance. Teach these youngsters peaceful and effective conflict resolution so they won’t make a split second decision that causes them to end up under ground or behind bars. On that note…when you are old enough to know right from wrong regardless of your upbringing, you have to strive to overcome the obstacles. Get out of victim mentality and go and get it. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. Philippians 4:13

Yes it is a shame that this young man had to die this way, but I wonder if things would have went the other way and the shop owner would have been killed or one of your family members were killed by these 3 adults. Would everyone have the same view? Everybody has free will, and yes everyone should be well aware of the consequences. I know very successful people who had parents that were crackheads and some in foster care (how embarrassing one might feel) but they stayed out of trouble, some didnt make it and got in trouble, others finished high school, graduated from college, and became a physician assistant, in the military, government worker. Point is a lot are leading productive lives. It is a challenge I agree, but if we all are so concerned about turning these children around become foster parents, adopt, or volunteer. Each one teach one.

Well ok, so Brandon was only 18, not 20. So what crow was he in? I'm sure my crow don't go robbing any one for a living, we all work. Was he not borned in the USA ? I got my social security card for free. Any person (child, teen) in the system I think has to have a SS muber anyway right? I know that ID cards are not that much, besides I think that when it comes to trying to get out of the countys expenses, strings can be pulled and a ID card is not a problem to get a job. REAL TALK is sooo right about the real care and time it takes to raise a kid. So happy to hear some one had a young mother that cared, that really cared for a change. All (mothers) that seek shall find MATTHEW 7:7 Sorrry for those that had none for what ever reason. Remember a few years back Mr. Rios lost some one because of a robbery that may be the reason that Mr. Rios had that gun for protection.
Aug. 26, 2010 at 10:41 p.m.
@Real Talk
I agree with you 100 %-If you could be our cities Representative we would have less use for this HR report. Can you run for office?LOL. But seriously, the way you were raised is the way all of these knucklheads should have been raised. There are so many young ladies having babies at such a young age;my neice had a baby when she was 14-I am still in shock about that and it has been four years since it happened. The only good part is the baby is healthy and she has the support of her family. Most of these young girls have no support system and they end up with more children and relying on the welfare system to help them raise their children. So if you could speak out with the same testimony you wrote here at a high school or middle school it might help save one kid from making a bad decision like Brandon Lincoln

Jag - Why do you think the D.A. would file charges against the owner? He was protecting himself from a bunch of armed robbers.
Aug. 27, 2010 at 7:26 a.m.
in response to jag - he might be in trouble because you cannot shoot somebody for stealing you stuff. by the video they were only there maybe three seconds and by information reported he started shootin as soon as they brokr a glass. the fact no weapons were found and the short time they were there, he probably was not threatened. what if that only wanted to vandalize and run out. what if some one stepped on your lawn and you thought they were going to steal the hula-hoop or even if they did steal it, you can not shoot them. i hate crimminals as much as anyone, but you cannot shoot someone if you think they are going to steal your stuff. i should have brandished his weapon, and they probably would have ran so i am with jag, the owner could be in trouble. at the least he will never open again. i am not a street person but they dudes were and they know other street people. i doubt of those other people will let they guy go back in business. i wish him luck but i believe he is ruined.
Aug. 27, 2010 at 7:47 p.m.
The store owner had every right to shoot them once they started acting in a violent manner.
Nothing is going to happen to him. In fact, just out of principle, the store owner should sue the family of the deceased to help pay for the damage he caused.
Aug. 27, 2010 at 11:53 p.m.
This store owner did what every victim of crime wishes they could do (protect themselves), but many are not prepared when things happen like this, and unfortunately they are murdered. Like the people murdered in the Pot shops a while back.
I don't feel that this man shot the robbers to protect his property, he probably shot them to save his own life. He should consider himself very lucky to have survived this ordeal, and should be given some sort of award for marksmanship and courage by the mayor of LA.
Aug. 28, 2010 at 4:14 a.m.
While watching the aftermath video, the Dectective had a BIG SMILE on his face while telling what happened. Was that because the store owner was mexican? Was it because the deceased robber was black? So the mexican owner killed a black man? You think that's something to smile about? H*** No!
Aug. 28, 2010 at 9:35 a.m.
megahead, baabue..really? The three goons went inside the store and as what we call it in the hood " acted a fool" they were violent and the owner acted in self defense. Oh yea ,vandalism ? Megahead do me a favor ,take a baseball bat and give it a good wack to the windshield of a P71 when a the person is in the front seat is typing in information on his computer and see if you wont get shot. Oh you were just trying to vandalize the car so its not your fault you got killed..come on now use common sense ( disclaimer :just using it as an example I dont condone any kind of violence to our men and women serving us)
Aug. 28, 2010 at 7:18 p.m.
for the record i hate criminals!!
i know the internet is not always accurate but if you do a search there are a lot of recent articles from ca. and other states where store keepers unjustly shot would be robbers and have been put in jail. the guy in the jewerly store might have really felt for his safety and it might have been self defense. all i am saying is you can go to jail if you shoot somebody for SOLELY sealing your stuff.
Aug. 29, 2010 at 3:22 p.m.
— megahead, the robbers were armed. The moment they brandished a weapon they sealed their fate.
Listen to the link for the TV report and what the detective said happened.
Aug. 29, 2010 at 9:43 p.m.
these boys were NOT armed! you cannot just shoot people because they are taking your stuff. i am not justifying the behavior on behalf of these boys; stealing is wrong. but mr rios should be charged with murder. and brandon lincoln was a good kid who made a very poor decision. i know that it is hard for many of you who are so detached from this population to believe, but brandon had a kind heart. and, yes, i will say it again, he made a very poor decision.
Aug. 30, 2010 at 5:58 a.m.
@ syscom3 >The store owner had every right to shoot them once they started acting in a violent manner.>
Is what you said case law or are you once again just being a low life?
Your saying if someone acts violent they can legally be shot with no ramifications? y or n
Aug. 30, 2010 at 7:16 p.m.
— Nosyscom3, once they began threatening him, the store owner had every right to defend himself. These villans were not shoplifters, but armed thugs willing to kill.
End of story. Anything else you need to know?
Aug. 31, 2010 at 8:53 a.m.
Nosyscom3,
Bet me your minimum wage check Mr. Rios doesn't get charged with anything. I'll give you 3 to 1 odds on the amount.
None, you may know this dude but don't say these guys weren't armed when some of them clearly were.
Aug. 31, 2010 at 2:12 p.m.
So all of you out to make a coment, who is the victimmm ? The REAL VICTIM ? I just wonder, seems no one is reading or caring about all those coments posted in this page, and I saw the video, yes the cop was smilling away, of course, he wanted to look GOOD ! I dougth he cared either way for Rios or Brandon. The cop was doing the routine of when there is a shooting. The cop also MENTION that a group of 4 had been targetting the area, so for you that know Brandon, I believe he didn't just get invited on that DAY to come along like when one meets friends and they are going to a party and then they will say " just come with us, it's ok, the more the better" NO this was planned ! Right.... they knew what they were up-to. Robbers don't care, all they have in their minds is getting all they can regadless of the result, who dies or who lives. The video was sad, the part where his body just lays there, alone. Don't think I have a stone for a heart. Sorry for him and I am sorry for his relatives.
Aug. 31, 2010 at 6:18 p.m.
@562vert, you scrubbed toilets?
Sept. 1, 2010 at 11:01 a.m.
Yes I did , I was a custodian for schools , the kid had it comming . Most of the time you hear about a dog taking a chunk out of man's backside this time the man took a bite out of the dog.
Sept. 1, 2010 at 2:53 p.m.
in all in all them dudes went in there triping no gun 4 dudes blame them and not the owner if that was anyone of our store we all would have did the same what was he to do wait to get shot i see to many times where they shot the owner for nothing how do you go in to rob anything without a gun or just dont worry about the owner like he is nor there he had every right to blast thats just like someone coming in your house im sorry for the loss im a black man from the hood but they didnt know what they were doing and paid for it
Sept. 1, 2010 at 4 p.m.
Meck, I'm in support of people defending themselves and property. I know is easier said than done, but I rather lose a few items than having to kill somebody and having to carry it in my conscience for the rest of my life. I'm interested to know if the DA will charge the owner with anything. It seems now days you get sent to jail for even protecting yourself.
Sept. 2, 2010 at 1:59 p.m.
@yessyscom3
He may never get charged and I do not bet thats for idiots and wanna be "yesmen".
I know you make minimum wage because you brought it up. or most likely your a broke out of work loser sitting at home collecting unemployment tossing back cheap beer get a life and stop cosigning - you have "Zero Credit"
yessyscom3- earn a degree or try and find a money making talent, adding cover for a sociopath on a blog makes you no cash
Sept. 3, 2010 at 7:58 p.m.
so how do you feel when his family reads this!?!?...why are you even gonna comment if its negative at a time like this right or wrong!!!!...
zero decency from all of you!
Sept. 20, 2010 at 7:27 p.m.
— guest, this is a public blog, not the obituaries.
..... "zero decency from all of you!". You think the deceased showed any human decency when he was involved in an armed robbery?
The true victim is the store owner who had to use force to protect his life. Dont forget it!
