Carlos Suastegui, 38 [Updated]

Carlos Suastegui, a 38-year-old Latino, died Friday, Aug. 27, six days after he was assaulted in the 600 block of South Main Street in downtown L.A., according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Suastegui was attacked Aug. 21 at about 11 a.m., said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

He was punched in the face, fell backward and hit his head, Winter said. Someone called 911 and paramedics took him to a hospital where he remained until his death six days later.

The official cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head, according to coroner's records.

Winter said coroner's records gave no indication about whether an arrest had been made in connection with Suastegui's death.

The Times has contacted investigators to obtain more information about the case and will provide an update as soon as details as soon as possible.

[Update Sept. 9: LAPD Central homicide Det. Al Marengo, who is handling the investigation, said  an arrest has been made in connection with the case. However, pending charges from the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, he was unable to provide the suspect's name.

Marengo said the incident started when two men, one of them Suastegui's friend, began fighting. While Suastegui tried to pull his friend away from the altercation, a third individual approached and punched Suastegui in the face, which led to the other fatal injuries.

The first two people in the fight are not facing charges, Marengo said. The incident was not gang-related.]
