Charles Bohnhoff, 55 [Updated]

Died May 18, 2009 at 9:57 a.m.

Charles Alan Bohnhoff, a 55-year-old white man, was shot several times and killed on Monday, May 18, in the 3400 block of 26th Street in Vernon, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Bohnhoff, the owner of Bohnhoff Lumber Co., was one of two men killed in what authorities described as a workplace dispute.  Saul Gastelum Moreno, 51, a lumber yard employee, has been charged with killing Bonhoff and co-worker Jaime Sanchez, 31, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Moreno has also been charged with the attempted murder of Bohnhoff's son, according to the district attorney's office. Prosecutors allege that Moreno pointed a gun at Bohnhoff's son, who was not named, but the trigger jammed.

Vernon police arrived shortly after 9:40 a.m. and saw Moreno driving away. Police chased him until he crashed in Huntington Park; he was arrested and a gun was recovered, the Whittier Daily News reported.

According to the district attorney's office, Moreno is eligible for the death penalty, although the office has not decided whether to seek it.
