Homicide Report > Christopher Galloway, 21
Christopher Galloway, 21
Died May 31, 2010 at 1:40 a.m.
Christopher Galloway, a 21-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, May 31, in the 1800 block of West 74th Street in Manchester Square, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Galloway was standing with other people in front of a home where a party was taking place about 12:37 a.m. when he was approached by two males, said Det. Chris Barling, of the LAPD's Criminal Gang and Homicide unit.
The males said they knew girls inside the party and asked to enter, Barling said. When Galloway told them that he did not believe they knew anyone at the party, one of them pulled out a gun and shot at him, Barling said. No one else was hurt.
The two assailants, described as black males in their teens to mid-20s, then fled on foot.
Authorities were called, and Galloway was taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where he died at 1:40 a.m., according to coroner's records.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Det. Ernie Mendoza at (213) 485-1383.
[For the record: According to information provided by the coroner's office, an earlier post said Galloway was 25 years old, however, Det. Barling said he was 21. Also, an earlier version of this post incorrectly referred to Barling as Barley.]

This is scary. I live pretty close to this area, less than a mile away. It seems like a pretty quiet area, but then you hear about these knucklehead gangsters, and know that its not as safe as it seems.
June 2, 2010 at 11:19 a.m.
Van Ness, "seems like a quiet area"? Your joking right? This area is FILLED with gangs. Between St. Andrews Pl and Western on 74th street. I feel for this young man but standing guard at a party is a death wish. I have been to many o parties where ppl were turned away and started shooting. No one deserves to die and I doubt the police are going to do anything for this young man. In their minds heʻs just another dead black male in a high crime, lower-socio-economic area. Sad indeed...
P.S - Where is Syscom on this? Oh thats right, the deceased is NOT Mexican...
June 3, 2010 at 10:03 a.m.
I was thinking the same Citizen X, I know that area well, I think it is anything but "quiet"......living near florence? are you kidding me?

Chris was a beautiful human being . a very loving friend and caring neighbor. We all in this community loved . Beautiful people dwell within in our neighbor. not everybody knows their neighbors like we know ours. care for theirs like we do .. somebodies kids are out and about looking for attention and the love they lack at home . somebodies kids are going un accounted for . destroying lives and neighborhoods . or neighbors are family.. we loved him dearly . Get in you community and change things.. while we try to recover ours . so our kids can play safely outdoors like we use too and we can celebrate holidays again without guns being drown on innocent people.

Christopher may your heart and soul lie in peace. You are home now, where you belong. We as law abiding citizens need to take back our streets from these SO CALLED "GANGS". They are nothing to me but COWARDS!!!!!
June 3, 2010 at 1:53 p.m.
We want justice! It's so sad that people feel that they have the right to take another person's life. I truly hope that they find and sentence the shooter to life in prison!
June 3, 2010 at 3:32 p.m.
— Citizen X, what do you want me to say. No mention of him being a gangster. Just minding his business and then gunned down.
Thats why I support agressive police and legal intervention to keep all known gangsters to either be in jail, or to be in preventive lockup.
And youre right about too many parties turned into a shooting gallery. Thats they type of dysfunction that occurs in these killing fields.
June 3, 2010 at 3:42 p.m.
whats up with going head up "niggas" meaning if your black white hispanic whatever your race is "definiton" a nothing ass person im tired hearing bout inocent people getting gun down in the streets who give these cowards the right to take someones life put the guns down and fight like a man...my condolence to the family...wake up people this is something that thats happening far to often we need to stand together as one again an gets them fools of the streets...

June 3, 2010 at 8:36 p.m.
Lena you are right. I grew up with Chris. He was a beautiful person. Every time I would see him he would be smiling. He did not deserve to be killed or anyone for that matter. Tara is also right, gangs are nothing but cowards. The persons responsible for this ruined dozens to hundreds of lives including their own. You are such a "gangster tough guy, not scared of anything" but go into hiding after you pull a trigger?? COWARD! We shouldnt have to live in fear! Afraid to leave our houses and jobs because we're worried if we will be caught in crossfire or make it home to see our families again. We MUST take back our neighborhoods!
June 3, 2010 at 9:06 p.m.
— Dynasty .... you want to take back your neighborhood?
Start with the upcoming elections. Instead of voting in the same do nothing politician, why not vote for someone else?
June 3, 2010 at 11:07 p.m.
He had to bang if he told them they couldnt get in, if u have a house party in Los angeles period, u have to allways prepare for somehtin like this.. either enemies trying to come into the party or if u dont bang u have to worry about gangs from the neighborhood trying to come in.
June 4, 2010 at 1:11 a.m.
My Condolence go out to Mr. Christopher Galloway's Family, and I pray that you one day get justice for your lose; Those Cowardly S.O.Bs! was such losers that they had nothing better to do then to crash a party looking for trouble anyway, or who they could have killed inside the party.
"Hey Cowards!!", What ever happened to fighting with your fist like a man?, because you took the sissy way, and probably don't know how to fight like a man, or for that matter be a man, "I guess now, you feel your tough, because you took this guys life, right?, I hope that one day when you find yourself on the other side of the gun you cowards, that you think about the lives you destroyed, or took, and your people don't start with this he was so sweet crap, after you could cold-heartedly take someone's life like that's the thing to do, "YOU COWARDS!!"

syscom3, I usually disagree with all your postings, but in regards to the upcoming elections and voting out the the same do nothing politician I'm 100% with you on this one.
June 4, 2010 at 3:26 p.m.
No, Im not kidding about the area. If you look at the homicide map, there are only a handful of shootings near the Florence/Van Ness area. Most of the shootings in South LA Occur South of Western aside from Major streets like Crenshaw.
June 4, 2010 at 4:35 p.m.
Van Ness, are you aware that Western runs north-south? There is no "south of Western."
June 4, 2010 at 7:52 p.m.
Within 1 mile of Van Ness and Florence; since 2007, there has been 26 homicides.
Within 2 miles, the number jumps to 94 murders.
Within 1 mile of where this murder took place, there has been 25 murders.
June 4, 2010 at 11:15 p.m.
May the Lord bless the family and friends of this young man. I know the process is hard but I promise if you trust in Jesus, he will strengthen you.
June 6, 2010 at 3:26 a.m.

June 7, 2010 at 12:04 p.m.

June 7, 2010 at 8:11 p.m.
I'm in total shock...I'm tired of all the senseless violence period, but please tell me this isn't Chris Galloway that used to go to St. Bernard?
June 7, 2010 at 8:29 p.m.
Wow "Insider"..... you should never leave a comment like that when you know nothing about that person and for your information he was not a gangster nor was he a robber! He was in the wrong place at the wrong time!
June 7, 2010 at 9:30 p.m.
Chris Galloway was a cool person and although its been a while since we spoke he was a good guy and didnt deserve to b done like this. People need to stop judgin others they dont know get over yourself and your stereotypes of young black men. RIP CHRIS and you and your family are in my prayers... ALL YOUR FELLOW BERNARD KIDS LOVE YOU RIP
June 7, 2010 at 11:32 p.m.
This is in response to the Insider's comment; Your comment was very distasteful especially if you don't know that person and who are you to JUDGE someone. You're not GOD and therefore you need to seek God and all his righteousness because reading your comment you're an IDIOT!!!!!! If you know what it means.
June 8, 2010 at 12:59 a.m.
R.I.P. Christopher Galloway
To Insider- You are so angry with the victim-did he do something to you? He was at a house party (which now days is a death sentence) doing what young people have the right to do -ENJOY THEMSELVES - the shooter was a usless, lowlife and so chose to shoot a innocent person because some how Christopher knew he was no good and did not let him in the party. I think Christopher saved a lot of lives that night by being the only one killed because the COWARDS would have killed more people if they were allowed in the party.
June 8, 2010 at 10:54 a.m.
Slimecom3: Oh, thank you for your firm grasp of the obvious. It's amazing how smart you think you are after reading a google map.
So how much do you think you contribute to a grieving family with your gas-bag drivel?
June 8, 2010 at 9:38 p.m.
Slimecom3: That's right, gravitate to the racism. Your ignorance and prejudice speaks volumes about you in your own words.
One can only hope that YOUR eulogy is written on these pages. That way all of the families you have hurt and insulted will have the opportunity to judge YOU by a paragraph of text gleaned from a police report to summarize the value of your life!
June 8, 2010 at 9:46 p.m.
Roger,
Is the map not a factual report? He was commenting on the post that said, "There have only been a handful of shootings". Within a two-mile radius 96 shootings is A LOT more than a handful wouldn’t you agree? What is with the name-calling? That would be like me calling you Roger Uterus......I think why people despise Syscom the way they do is simply because people have not learned that ACCEPTANCE is wonderful thing, it is empowering to accept the truth. I read this report often and see a lot of denial. Old saying is "truth hurts" I think Syscom keeps it real, he tells the truth, he backs up his posts and most people cant deal with the truth. Oh.....and remember they are all in a better place and only god can judge them right?
June 9, 2010 at 3:34 p.m.
why dont they show a picture of the victim anymore?
June 9, 2010 at 8:34 p.m.
— Roger Upuras, I didnt use a google map. I used the LA Times provided homicide map. Have you ever used it?
As for me being a racist; please provide a posting and quote where I have said or implied such a thing.
As for the deceased? There was one comment about him being a gangster. I asked him to provide more information to us. Too you, thats racism. To a rational person, thats just asking for information.
June 10, 2010 at 8:01 a.m.
Boowahahah! Swineyboy, get a clue!
Have you ever noticed the Google Maps logo on the bottom of your "Homicide Map?"
You've got both feet in your mouth and there's still room for more in there!
June 10, 2010 at 9:27 a.m.
The homicide report for hyde park, for which this is the neighborhood DOES NOT report 97 murders, rather it reports 31 since 2007 which is roughly 10 murders a year, for a city/area the size of hyde park, I would say its a handful. see: http://projects.latimes.com/homicide/neighborhood/hyde-park/
June 10, 2010 at 10:28 a.m.
Truth hurts? Yeah, especially when knuckleheads come on this blog and break wind. So YOU are the keeper of the truth? I'll remember that the next time you spew your self-righteous bigotry into the ghettos of L.A. via this website.
You have no facts. Get a grip on reality, this is a newspaper you narcissistic prima donna. They love your ignorance! It's sells!
June 10, 2010 at 11:11 a.m.
Thats true Van Ness. But look at the shape of the neighborhood. Its an odd shaped district. There are a lot of homicides that are adjacent to this neighborhood but are not included in just a neighborhood/district/city view.
The same can be said about Compton. You can say it has has "X" numbers of homicides per year. But go a mile or more outside its city limits, the numbers increase considerably.
That's why homicides listed as per a specific distance from a given point is a far more accurate method of displaying (and interpreting) the data.
June 10, 2010 at 12:50 p.m.
Syscom3,
Anytime someone calls your bluff, you always come back with some lame statistic bending the truth towards proving your point. Get a life. You've probably never had a girlfriend.
June 10, 2010 at 8:09 p.m.
I met Chris when he was in elementary school. It was my great pleasure to coach him in basketball for a few years. I remember his grandparents pride when he was accepted into St. Bernards HS. I spent many hours in his home and he many more in my car traveling to practices and games. He was the consumate gentleman even at 13. We will always remember his smile and sense of humor as well as his love for family and friends, his work ethic and kind nature. Rest in Peace, Chris. You will be remembered with love and respect.
June 11, 2010 at 2:08 p.m.
Unfortunatly I have learned that Syscom is truly ignorant to the true economical, sociological issues that take place in these communitys. And I expect others to favor his/her views in light of their own opinions due to their lack of knowledge. For every epidemic (in this case homicidal epidemic) there is a cause. To truly come to terms w/ what goes on one has to look in a broader sense. It goes beyond politics, it goes beyond judgement, it goes beyond being on the outside looking inside more as a Critic then a Volunteer of Change, beyond the Blog dialogue but in the streets that need them. But if you are even closed minded to even broadning your mind to endulge on the deeper issues then I question your motives. To incite more negatism on a blog only breeds more negatism. If you never offer ideas for change.. once again, what is your motive? are you truly MOVED by all this or AMUSED by all of this? What motivates you to check these HR Blogs everyday especially if your so heartless to the victims familys in the first place?
June 11, 2010 at 2:12 p.m.
Hey CJ, in my opinion this violence has less to do with economics than culture. What we have going on is people embracing the violent gang lifestyle which means crime, drugs, and death. They know the risks and horror that inevitably comes but they continue down that path. As you read this blog you will commonly see family members and acquaintances denying the root cause and, yes as syscom3 refers to it, enabling this garbage. People like you, though obviously well meaning, are also part of the problem because you provide a convenient socioeconomic, 'there's something wrong with the system' excuse for their inexcusable behavior. BTW, before anyone goes off, I'm not claiming Mr. Galloway was part of that as we do not yet have any proof or claim to that effect.
June 11, 2010 at 3:10 p.m.
— Paul, many people say I am wrong; but no one comes up with factual evidence to prove it. What part of the homicide map am I interpreting wrong? Be specific please.
CJ - obviously you have never read all my posts on the dysfunctional neighborhoods and how many different issues have to be addressed simultaneously in order to fix things. As I have always said; the path to change must come from the people who live there and to start voting in representatives who will work for improvement instead of the same do nothing blow hards who know how to blame others, but not to fix things.
As for inciting more negativism? I am just a single commentator who is calling it like it is. I am not PC and some people are shocked by what I say because maybe its the first time they have to look in the mirror and acknowledge some cold hard facts.
June 11, 2010 at 3:47 p.m.
i heard this guy was a banger from 60 napk crip
June 12, 2010 at 12:12 p.m.
— ws 1x7streetverzsidehard; if what you say is true, then more of the truth comes out about the deceased.
June 12, 2010 at 8:22 p.m.
Chris will always be remembred for making everyone laugh, he was a very fun person to be around.RIP Chris you will not be forgotten.
June 14, 2010 at 1:44 a.m.
ws 1x7streetverzsidehard: Are you a banger? Where do you get your information?
syscom: I hope you never have the opportunity to make any decisions that affect me or my loved ones. You agree with whatever statements coincide with your self-determined "truth".
June 14, 2010 at 12:14 p.m.
@ Citizenjohn with respect to your opinion, when you truly study the sociological aspect of communitys such as these you would know that unfortunately part reason persons tend to embrace gang life styles is because of the effects of their environment. Not so much as to how they were raised,, but what may have taken place as they were raised, what they witnessed or even experienced. When you are in a oppressed environment unfortunately the street lifes way of obtaining becomes motivational, especially when you lack true examples in your childhood. I think the majority of us whether even sub conciously desires to have the best in our lives, its just the avenue we take to obtain it. Citizenjohn, there is much to address when it comes to these things. Too many to try and post under this blog. I apologize that you have interpretated my comment as saying something is "wrong w/ the system" because I have never incited that nor do I believe that in totallity. I actually have a broader view in my thinking. I am not so ignorant in my thinking to base my opinion solely on only blaming the system you are refering to. Also, in my posts I have never made any excuses for anyone. Perhaps you have never really viewed any of the comments I have left. Lastly, I can accept that people are entitled to their opinions/beliefs and certain responses are fueled by their experiences. My question to you is this.. Where you raised in a community like this? What experience have you had relative to those that were? or are you a suburban outsider only affected threw what you read on these HR blogs and on the News?
June 16, 2010 at 12:59 p.m.
@Syscom, actually I have come across a few of your posts. The overall theme I have gathered from the majority of your posts moreso tend to speak on the political aspect. I don't ever recall a post were you speak of simultaneous efforts, but if you have my apologies to you. I also recall an instance in which we expressed dialogue between each other and I expressed the responsibity of everyone, not just the residents. I also asked you what you were willing to contribute or volunteer for the enhancement of such a community giving you too seem to obviously be affected by what you see & read. You never responded directly to that. I questioned your motives asking if your into the rhetoric or moved beyond the blog talk. Know that I too am not into the "blame game" and thats on both sides, whether your in the midst of the turbelance or your an outsider looking in such as yourself. We ALL are accountable in some way even if indirectly. How easy it is for me as a spectator to spectate w/o truly endulging in the cause beyond these blogs. To me that makes your comments more empty then beneficial.
to be continued...
June 16, 2010 at 3 p.m.
@Syscom, Secondly, behavior breeds behavior... what good am I when I encourage more negative w/ my negative when the situation was already in a downward spiral in the first place? It ultimately only stimulates more criticizm and stereotypical thinking on both sides of the fence.
So who's gonna be the bigger person?who is gonna be the positive example?
Majority of the posts I see you comment tend to only infuriate the familys and the communitys who feel you don't have a clue in the first place. Do you have a clue or just an hypothesis? Based on past discussions we have had I have analyzed that your speaking is usually only in theory. Truly only the facts we can take from these blogs are from the articles themselves and even in it some writings are questionable. Im one for the truth being told as it is Syscom really I am but thats not what you do and you & I both know it. Your comments are misguided and generally appear to be a pre conceived prejudice long before all the facts are given, if they even are at all. Naturally the family would speak well of there loved one,, thats to be expected. Would you speak ill of your mother, son, daughter or friend at his/her funeral or memorial Syscom?? Lets be realistic. Would you? The situation may be painfully obvious in itself threw the article alone. So can you say that your negative comments help? Yet your negative comments seem to out way more of your enlightening ones informing how voting matters and various resources to educate. To me collectively looking at your comments you appear to make a mockery of this. That is my opinion. I have yet to see were your motives appear pure other then in asking commentators what they may know about the case & if they have reported it to the authoritys. And I think its extremely rare to see you post on a victim who truly was a victim w/o any gang undertones regarding their case. But I understand that you too are entitled to your opinion nor your delivery but I respect your opinions although I may not agree.
June 16, 2010 at 3:02 p.m.
Thank You CJ.......this guy Sissycom is an IDIOT
