Claud Payne, 27

Died Oct. 17, 2011

Claud Payne, a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Oct. 17, near West 126th Street and South Berendo Avenue in Athens, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Payne and a 33-year-old man were injured during the shooting. Authorities were called and the two victims were taken to a hospital, where Payne was pronounced dead, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

According to coroner’s records, Payne suffered several gunshot wounds to his back and torso.

The other injured man underwent surgery, officials said. His name was not released.

Shortly after 5 p.m., a 17-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the attack, authorities said.

Since January 2007, at least 105 homicides have been reported within two miles of the shooting scene, according to The Times' Homicide Report database.
