Darius Truly, 26
Died Oct. 27, 2007 at 3:33 a.m.
Darius Ever Truly, 26, a black man, was found stabbed to death in the 3600 block of Bentley Avenue in Palms about 3:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. He had been at a party—large and loud enough for police to have come at some point during the night to quiet guests. Afterward, he was walking down the street with a cousin. A suspect, or perhaps more than one, walked up and stabbed them both. Truly died at the scene. The cousin was not as badly injured, and ran away.
Truly was an actor. He had studied theater in college, said a college friend, and had arrived from Tennessee in recent months to play Black Panther Bobby Seale in a production of "The Chicago Conspiracy Trial" at the Odyssey Theatre. The production was reviewed by both the L.A. Weekly and the Los Angeles Times. He had no criminal record, nor do police believe he was involved in any way in local street fighting or gang wars.

I wanted to pay my respects to Darius. I never knew him however his case has always stuck with me. A young law abiding man, moved to LA to make a name for himself and his life was taken on a night out when he was just having fun.
Its been nearly 3 years since his passing, but I want it known that he isnt forgotten, even by a stranger such as me.
I pray he is in peace.

When this happens I can't make head or tails of it. You come to try and make a life for yourself and then your dead. The simple days of walking down your own street after dark are over let alone attending a party. Someone is always watching or waiting. If you are going to move here please do not be naive to the streets because they will eat you alive. I am sorry for this life lost before it had the chance to flourish. Make your scene playout in heaven forever young soul.

If you search "Darius Truly" on youtube there are a couple of tribute videos that give you a sense of the kind of young man he was. A very promising future snuffed out by the killing fields.

Daruis went to visit LA and then eventually moved from Atlanta to there. He was cool peeps, and he was telling me he had some beef with somebody who thought he was in a gang. Does anyone know if they found a suspect in the murder?

@Yada
Your comment sheds light on an otherwise cold case. The above photo shows him donning a red scarf-- did he not realize that his fashion sense might mistakenly mark him as gang-affiliated? Is that how he typically dressed? Seriously, how many of us take DMV photos wearing bright red scarves? Either he was innocently naive upon his move to LA, or he was brazenly invitng confrontation.
I thank the LA Times for this blog, because it's really opening my eyes to the danger that is The City of Angels.
