Darrell Logan, 32

Died Oct. 13, 2011 at 12:37 p.m.

Darrell Logan, a 32-year-old black man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy Thursday, Oct. 13, in the 3100 block of Heather Avenue in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Deputies late Thursday morning responded to a call that gunfire was coming from a house, officials said.

When deputies reached the home, they ordered people in the garage to come out, but the people refused, said Lt. Mary Leef.

Deputies then entered the garage and were confronted by Logan, who was armed, Leef said. Logan was shot and taken to a hospital, where he died. A handgun was recovered from the scene.

Leef said it was not clear if that was the weapon Logan used to confront deputies.

The deputy’s name is not being released pending an investigation, Leef said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the sheriff's homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800) 222-8477.

Five reader comments about Darrell Logan

A Black or Hispanic man when holding a weapon inside their property are consider a threat to cops, but when a white man holds a weapon in his own property is a right.. a right to bare arms!

regardless, U comply with Police or face the consequences. If he had come out the garage with his hands up, he'd be alive in jail right now, he made his choice and I'm sure he knew the consequences. RIP.

— Jag, your rhetoric gets old. It's not a race issue. It's a "being stupid with a gun" issue. Neighbors called about gun shots. There was a gun recovered. Black, white, Hispanic - all have been killed. Remember the white guy holding the garden hose nozzle?

Seriously people, don't be stupid. Yes, stupid. If the police tell you to come out, then come out. They didn't pick this house at random. They went there because they were called there by people who heard gunshots. The decedent was a danger when he refused to comply and sadly, he paid for that. I wish it weren't so.
