Died June 29, 2010

David Juarez, a 20-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, June 29, near Santa Monica Boulevard and St. Andrews Place in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Los Angeles Police Department officials said gunfire was reported near the intersection about 3 p.m.

Officers responding to the scene were struck by another vehicle as they crossed a nearby intersection. They were taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, including pain and a cut to the head, police said.

Juarez had been fatally wounded as he sat in a car, police said. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call (877) 527-3247.

Six reader comments about David Juarez

A very bold murder.

From LAist:

"A few minutes before 3 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot while driving his car by a pedestrian who fled on foot. David Juarez, a Hollywood resident who was driving southbound on St. Andrews Place towards Santa Monica Boulevard, crashed into oncoming traffic before his vehicle came to a rest across the busy boulevard, according to police. Police say the incident was gang related."

I drove by this murder scene, (hours later), and David Juarez had driven his car across Santa Monica and smashed a lamp post. The lamp was completely gone when I was there. It feels like this murder was spontaneous as Juarez was spotted and attacked.

First of all I wanna to to say R.I.P David Juarez...My heart goes out to his family...I am not here to judge David weather he was a gang member or not it does not matter to me at all...David had a mother and a father that now live with a loss of their CHILD and David was a human being of our society... I am not anybody to judge his life style on here without never meeting him. Like I said he was someones child and friend that I am sure of and that alone makes him deserve to R.I.P-I am here to express my opinion about what I read in the paper about this crime so please DONT judge me all I am saying is my personal opinion weather you feel I am right or wrong its just my opinion... I live a block away from where David was killed...Many people dont know this but the intersection of Santa Monica & Western is a very dangerous area...Its a well known hang out of "Undercover" MS 13 Gang Members... You might not think so cause you dont see any bold headed big pants wearing young guys walkin around but trust me the guys that are with pony tails and long hair wearing normal size clothes chillin on the corners are the ones you should watch out for... They might look innocent but under those clothes most of them are branded with huge MS 13 tatoos...You might think they look harmless but u dont realize that they will take your life away from you in a split second if they think you are from a rival n'hood...just like they took David's life... and I am about 99.9% sure David was killed by a MS 13 gang member thinkin he was from a rival n'hood...That intersection is very close to alot of MS 13 rivals like White Fence , La Mirada , 18 St...David was killed around 3 pm and that intersection around that time if full of people but trust me MS 13 dont care they will kill at a drop of a dime no matter what... Just like they shot that Armenian guy in the swapmeet couple of years ago thinking he was a rival gang member and leaving the guy on a wheelchair for the rest of his life...that swapmeet by the old Sears building is also very dangerous place to be...AND FOR THE RECORD NO I AM NOT A GANG MEMBER AND NEVER WAS ! JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT BEFORE I GET BASHED BY SOMEONE ON HERE...I JUST LIVE IN THE AREA AND I SEE CRIME ALMOST ON DAILY BASIS GOIN ON IN THIS AREA...KIND OF HARD NOT TO NOTICE...ANYWAYS R.I.P DAVID P.S. 20 YRS OLD SO MUCH LIFE AHEAD OF HIM AND NOW HE DEAD FOR NO REASON...ANYBODY THAT IS A GANG MEMBER AND COMES ON HERE SAYING THAT THIS IS THE LIFE STYLE IS AN IDIOT THE END...GANG = DEATH OR PRISON...

M.A.X213 is telling the truth. Santa Monica Blvd & Western Ave is a very dangerous area. It is controlled by the MS13 gang. Mara Salvatrucha 13 is an El Salvador gang. Trust me when I say they will kill you without thinking twice. They will even battle LAPD. I once was almost killed on Western Ave by a group of them. By the grace of God. I was let go. Had a 9mm Pointed right at me, These boys and girls are no joke. I have seen them chase cars of rival gang members on foot. I'll bet David Juarez was shot by one of them. They are killers. I am only speaking from experience. Having a 9mm gun pointed at you, with someone having control of your life. Deciding whether your going to live or die is a very humbling experience. I don't know you, but R.I.P David.

That is correct! We are use to the stereotypical bad dressed 80's gangster.
Oversized/baggy clothes shaved heads, the obvious ugly ones w no style! Truth is the state they live in has a lot to do w how they dress.. (we all know u don’t have to look like a bad guy to be one). BUT If u saw a N.Y. gangster walking around u may not know it.. may just look industry stylish to us. Central America is not known as peaceful country. They have known brutal violence for generations now. For years now a lot of their trash sadly has made it this way. Most dangerous for us is they are smarter than the local thugs. They come from poverty, see crime as a way of business $$$. Not as an exciting lifestyle or place to fit in like most kids here! Sad that they are giving legal immigrants a new look, since you really can’t tell them apart from a Latin farm worker or laborer!

Before people yell all PC.. I am speaking of the ones that refuse to assimilate. The ones not here to make this country better instead want to profit from their greed our streets and yes to intimidate us as they do where they are from.. all to just send back money there and so it continues!

Thanks for posting!

This area definately has a lot of gangs ...

Mara Salvatrucha 13 (Hollywood Lokotes) is often tagged up right around the Santa Monica / Western intersection.

I was walking through here and saw a big MS13 tag on the wall crossing out some other nearby gang called Rebels 13

Other gangs also claim turf near this area like the W/S Armenian Pride 13, White Fence 13, JM 13, and La Mirada Locos

... but at first glance you'd never be able to tell

yes i lived right in the thick of that neighborhood for years you really have to mind your p's an'q's around there because a lot of rivals are fighting for turf. i tell my friends not to go around there and shop and wander around because it is a very dangerous gang area. MS 13 especially are no ones to be messing with or crossing at the wrong time.
