Davion Childs, 17

Davion Childs, 17, a black youth, was shot in the 15700 block of South Tarrant Avenue in Gardena about 6:04 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3. This was a drive-by shooting in an area of Los Angeles County patrolled by the Compton sheriff's station.

Childs, a resident of Compton, was visiting a friend when someone in a dark-colored vehicle drove up and shot him. Deputies responded to a shots-fired call and discovered Childs bleeding on the porch of a house. Childs was taken by ambulance to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His time of death was recorded at 6:53 p.m.

The shooting was gang-related, said Det. Charles Morales of the sheriff's homicide bureau. Morales said another black man was wounded by gunfire and was taken to the same hospital, where he recovered.
