Delays in updating the Homicide Report

As many regular readers have noticed, the Homicide Report has not been updated since Dec. 9, 2012.

The Times relies on Los Angeles County coroner's officials to provide a list each week of deaths determined to be homicides. Typically, coroner's officials are able to produce the list on Monday mornings; however, conflicts have caused delays for several weeks.

Coroner's officials said Friday they hope to be able to make the information available to the public as soon as possible.

In the meantime, updates about crime are available at "Crime and courts" and "Homicide Report" feeds.

Thank you for your patience.

The Homicide Report claims that , "The Times relies on Los Angeles County coroner's officials to provide a list each week of deaths determined to be homicides."

Now tell us..

How does that in anyway stop you guys from updating the comments? How is that stopping you from following up and or posting an update on an existing case?

Monday mornings; however, conflicts have caused delays for several weeks.

The coroners office has the list. It's updated daily. They're not providing it for reasons other than you mention. Something is wrong and you're not investigating it.

Time for an FOI request and start sticking it to them.

Okay the coroner's as always are not on top of the homicides like they should be so what does that have to do with the comments being over three weeks old? That sounds like the LA Times don't care to have the HR blogs up to date!

When Jill Leovy ran this blog, it was up-to-date and accurate. She would post murders the next day. Now, it takes weeks before the information is posted and some of it is incomplete. In December 2012, most of the victims don't have ages or locations. In October 2012, there is a week missing unless the county went 5 days without a homicide.
This blog is about real people. Jill Leovy seemed to understand that. These new journalists should learn that. The Los Angeles Times should treat this blog with respect. If there are problems getting information from the Coroner's office maybe the LA Times should investigate that.

Thanks for the update.
I think this is a great effort, on behalf of La Times honor those that have lost their lives, in and around Los Angeles County.

It is TRULY gratifying to know that the homicide rate in Los Angeles has plunged to zero since the start of the new year! What a cause for rejoicing! :)

It has now been over a month since the last update and nearly two months since the last homicide was posted. What's going on?

The homicide report is most informative but we the public have to understand that L.A. Times is not in the business of reporting Homicides it is a public service to the community that they do this which I appreciate so much because I found one of my Son's High School friends on this website so let's continue to be patient

It's March 11. Obviously the newspaper has lost interest in this section, so why don't they just say so?

Meck, when have I ever claimed I lived in Beverly Hills? I didn't think so. Unlike you I take pride of where I grew up and I do make an effort to encourage youngster stay away from the gang life style and drugs. Unlike you I wasn't fortunate enough to run away I mean to move away from Breed Street and I got to see a lot more than you ever did. I'm a busy person and my mind fingers can't keep up with my thoughts when I post any comments here. However, I'll be more than happy to challenge you on any research, essay, memo, or any other formal document to type from scratch and have others review and see who does better. What do you say Mr. Downey? LOL

Okay soon we will be in April and there are no homicides reported? I guess the entire judicial system doesn't want the public to know that homicides and crime in general are at it's historical lows and they can't justify the excessive number of staff employed. There are way too many cops in the streets and they have nothing else to do, but harras the hard working people!

— Jag

We the people who live in la county have every right to know what homicides are taking place in our county. I do not believe that homicides are at an all time low, I think its the opposite. Why else would you not report it. When it has been at an all time low it was reported in the la times.

FYI, I live in Orange County now. I moved for family reasons. Anyway, I'm done with this site. It seems like the people who maintained it, lost interest. Peace!

Jag,

Why has this blog become so important to you? Oh by the way before I get a smart rear end answer...please note that this is a real question. I just happened by this blog in December, yet when I went back to read some of it, the blog reeks of every low, bottom of the barrel human characteristic. So what is the importance of this blog to you?

What's the delay....a real reporter does not just want to sit in front of a computer and write an obituary. A person becomes a reporter for much bigger and better things. Is this site dead....yes! No body wants to keep it up, why should he or she? Just imagine all the time it takes. Don't blame the reporters at all....I work at my small town news paper and wouldn't take this job to regurgitate the obids everyweek for the extra money I would earn being at a big city newspaper at all.

I called the corners office my self today. They informed me that LOS ANGELES TIMES have not called them. If they want to know they should call them, not the other way around. So my thoughts are that the newspaper isn't doing their job, in helping the community!! Do your job, whom ever is in charge of this section I would like to know the homicide report.!!!!!!!!.

If the Times doesn't want to do the Homicide Report, that's fine and dandy. But why do they leave it here, with the phony excuse that the Coroner hasn't supplied the info and the phony promise that they're working on it? It does look like contempt for readers.

C'mon LA Times! Either hire some more people, or just tell us the homicide report is never coming back. I clicked on a few links with names on them, and they don't go anywhere. You haven't been bought by the Koch brothers yet. Get it together!
