Devian Luevanos, 20, a young black man, was shot in the 700 block of Greenleaf in Compton at about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, and died at a local hospital.

He was not a gang member, said Sgt. Steve Katz of the sheriff's homicide bureau. He was simply standing outside with friends when a young Latino man walked up and issued a gang challenge of some kind, provoking an argument. The Latino pulled a gun, shot Luevanos and fled. Luevanos died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Two reader comments about Devian Luevanos

Devian was one of my first students. We lost touch for awhile, but I caught up with him one day, and we talked. He seemed to be on the right path. He had a job and was doing fine. I didn't know that this had happened to him.

This young man was shot in my brothers front yard.he was not a gang member; trying to be a rapper.after the gang member shot him , the gang member walked away going past the young mans house.when my brother ran outside devian was ducking behind cars, not realizing that he had been shot .at this time he fell out and died.
