Donte Catchings, 18

Died Oct. 30, 2010

Donte Catchings, an 18-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, Oct. 30, in the 3600 block of Chesapeake Avenue in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Police received a call reporting a shooting about 6:30 p.m., said LAPD criminal gang and homicide Det. Dave Garrido. Authorities arrived and found Catchings shot in the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Garrido said.

The incident appears to be a walk-up shooting that was gang-related, he said.

Officials describe the shooter as a male black, 18 to 20 years old.

Anyone with information about the identity of the shooter or the circumstances leading up to Catchings' death is asked to contact Det. A. Burke or V. Carreon at (213) 485-4341. Tipsters who would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Four reader comments about Donte Catchings

May his soul rest in peace. To his family, May the Lord keep you during this time.
I do not know this young man, but, another life ended needlessly.
It is high time for the Los Angeles Community to get it together. No one cares because he's Black. Yet, remember, God does not judge us for who we are but what we do for each other. God created us for community.

Such a shame that Donte could not live to know his full potential. Donte, know that you were loved and will be missed.
