Homicide Report > Drexler Boyce, 18

Drexler Boyce, 18

Died April 24, 2010 at 7:34 a.m.

Drexler Boyce, an 18-year-old black man, died Saturday, April 24, a day after he was shot on the corner of Beach Avenue and Venice Way in Inglewood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Coroner's officials were unable to provide details about Boyce's death because his autopsy is still pending, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office. Winter said preliminary information indicated police believed the shooting was gang-related, although it was unclear if they believed Boyce was involved in gangs.

The Times will provide more information when it becomes available.

I can't believe I would have ever witnessed the day that you died. Its still shocking to me, I don't know what to actually say or do at this point I'm kind of lost. I hate that I couldn't talk to you or see you before this happened. You were always a good friend I promise I will never forget you.

My heart feels for your mother and grandmother. My prayer is that the lives that you have touched remember your kind and caring spirit forever. Our church family watched you grow into the man you had become. I will remember your manners they really mattered in this generation. God loved you more, welcome to his garden of PEACE as you rest from this life into eternal life.

Drex is my nephew, he was a kind, respectful, well mannered young man, with so much life ahead of him. Every time I saw Drex he'd always have a smile on his face. It is really a tragedy that his life has been stolen away from him before it really began!. When will all this senseless violence stop!!. To my brother, I love you and am here for you. To Drex's maternal family, may god keep you and give you strength, I am here for you as well.

I have watched Drexsler grow into a fine and mannerable young man and it crushed me when I heard the news of his passing. He left too soon. He still had alot of work that he needed to do. Work on hisself, work for his community, and work for GOD. Now, you are in God's loving care, so rest. To all of Drex's friends, please don't let his death be in vain. Memories are one thing but try to live ur life in honor of his memory. Work hard on yourself, work harder for GOD, work harder to stop this senseless violence and work harder toward a resoultion to keep families from ever having to deal with such a senseless act of unneccessary violence.

Im so hurt that Drex os gone, it wasnt that long ago that we were on the bus together and catching up after high school. He was funny, full of life, so much potential to be another asset in this world. I know now that he is a shining start up above in the heavens shining down on us in the night. I will never forget the day that we met. I will never forget the last time i seen him. I just wish he was anywhere else except at that corner that night. His body may be gone but his spirit still live's on, I Love You Drex you will never be forgotten big brother R.I.P ...

My sincere CONDOLENCES - to the family and friends of this young life..(I pass by everyday...and I'm reminded that I have to keep my chidlren safe.. but its NOT SAFE!)

I have to share with you all this just REALLY pisses me off.. I'm so sick of these "mexican gangs" taking away all these lives.... Not to mention the harrasment on the younger generation. My youngest daughter was assaulted (12) by two hispanics females (older teenagers) for "NO REASON" at all.. Then my son (15) and his friends were approached and chased by some mexican (older) gang memebers in Fox Hills..

This is an outrage and I wish IPD would handle this accordingly..

Every other week there has been a (young) LIFE lost.. literally.. This has to stop....!

Keeping it all in prayer...

Syscom3, LAPD are happy trigger individuals just like gang members are. You asked the questions and there's you answer. I'm sure you will never accpet that because you don't know anything of what happens in our inner cities. I wouldn't be surprise if you are somewhere from the southwest. Do all of us a favor and get a life.

RE: Concerned Parent,
Just as you are sick of " Mexican Gangs" killing people in your area then im sick of The "black Gangs" driving around in cars speeding and shooting out their windows like cowards and killing innocents. If the blacks want to gang bang at least step out and approach what they are shooting..bunch of Cowards.
IPD are sitting around laughing at all this nonsense

Hey "concerned parent" I am just as sick of your black gangs coming over here for no reason and killing INNOCENT PEOPLE!! Check the facts. Both gangs are guilty, so just because this time it happened to you guys dont blame it on us, accept the responsibility for your people, just like we do.

this guy was or associated the the gang nhp the next day after his murder there was spray painting on the wall by the gang member's from "nhp" that read "r.i.p drex nhp" and a few days later there was black nhp gang bangers with there red Philadelphia Phillis hats surrounding the candle visual, which they were as there gang hat.......

— inglewood residents
May 11, 2010 at 2:08 p.m.

Those are the cowards that are driving around shooting innocents and spraying the neighborhood with bullets. Its those cowardly and negligent acts that has brought retaliation to that side of town. If those NHP cowards dont want to see more of them drop they better stop with the cowardly acts.

— Chalino
May 11, 2010 at 2:36 p.m.

I am an inglewood resident and do not take sides of either gang, but this whole thing about classifying them as "mexican gangs" is just plain IGNORANT! not everyone that looks hispanic is mexican! so please refrain from using that word, it just sickens me! God bless these lost souls.

— hmm
May 11, 2010 at 10:05 p.m.

Wow.. really...

Let's get something straight.. I'm not racist..! I simply diretced my feelings on this post.. Because my children were victims of the silliness in the streets of Ingelwood..there's a life taken every other week that gets listed.

No-one is safe..! But, the recent deaths listed are based on those facts. The fact of the matter is that I'm entitled to say what I feel.. Young lives are being taken away... and it needs to stop...No-one deserves to have their life taken away (regardless of race and color).. I expressed my feelings.. because my children are BLACK and they were innocent victims of the mexican gang retaliation (and these folsk is way older picking on kids under 15..) -Its just sad that we have so much ignorance and words tend to get misconstrude...

Maybe the best that you can do.. since YOU had allot to say about my post.. is go PRAY.. on your soul (you seem quite angry)...Peace & Love!

RIP DEXTER....!

— Concerned Parent
May 12, 2010 at 9:31 a.m.

@ Mike.. Yes both gangs are just as "quilty".. I agree 100%...
I simply addressed Dexter's death and my chidlren's experience... It's senseless kilings...

— C Parent
May 12, 2010 at 9:34 a.m.

Wow.... Its seems as words always get misconstrude.. I'm in no-way racist..

I simply expressed my feelings..re: incident (the current gang activity with NHP & I13) Point is no-one should be a victim to these "senseless" killings.. Like, I said my children were victims of this silliness (they're innocent children - my babies)and it just so happen to be done by Hispanic gangs.. which I have every right to speak on. I may ahve not been wording it properly.. But in any case...
Dexter might have been gang affilated but, he DID NOT deserve to have his live taken away, period! And thats' what this is REALLY about.. I don't have time to deal with ingorance or negative energy...

RIP - "DEXTER"

Peace & Love!

— Concerend Parent
May 12, 2010 at 12:22 p.m.

The deceased did not deserve to be murdered, but being part of a gang greatly increased his chances of getting murdered.

And then there is the issue that since he was part of a gang, whose blood was on his hands?

— syscom3
May 12, 2010 at 2:25 p.m.

dexter ? drexler . . . ?! inglewood resident, you are exactly right he was involved in gangs since we were little, in 7th grade he got in a fight with my play brother over the blood and crip ignorance. its sad that he is gone, but instead of the parents arguing on here put all that effort into making sure no more kids are lost to the streets. Get it together !

— a friend
May 12, 2010 at 6:20 p.m.

Luckily for Drex, only god can judge him now!. I'm so glad that he knew the lord and he served him faithfully. Every body is saying that he was in a gang, does knowing people or even being related to a person who may have gang ties make you a gangster?. If he was... That gangster's pastor spoke so very highly at his funeral service!. So if he was a gangster he was a god fearing and serving one!!!.

RE: Concerned Parent
Just like you wanted to speak on it because your children are black, I have the exact same thing to say of all the LATINO people I know who have been killed by BLACK gang members. Your words were not misconstrued, you said " I am sick of these MEXICAN gangs taking away these lives" I think your point was crystal clear. Just like mine was!! I agree with the people who say if you're a gang member you know what the result is going to be. If you associate with them or just hang with them you're probably gonna end up dead, black, latino it doesn't matter. It's a never ending circle. People are always going to retaliate. In the end its the same result, lives lost for no reason at all!!

— Mike
May 13, 2010 at 11:25 a.m.

@ Mike.. I agree...
Its just sad.. and when I wrote I was very extremely upset.. becasue my kids are mixed.. but, regardless.. race or color.. gang or no gang. the end result it's that we're loosing our children to these senseless acts.. and Bottom line.. this was about DEXTER.. and how it affected me.. I spoke on it.. because my children had just been victims of this non-sense hispancis against blacks (its the gangs problem - not for the innocent.) So, again.. It's in God hands.. Im not her to debate with you or no-one else.. but, to keep my CHILDREN safe! I'm new to Ingelwood and it's an adjustment...

May 13, 2010 at 10:32 p.m.

Concerned Parent,

I too read your post and it was filled with just a little too much rasism. I am hispanic and no I do not agree with a mexican or black killing or shooting anyone especially each other but I don't blame all blacks for this and I don't blame all black gangs for this. As a hispanic woman I was taken back by your comments and the writing. Just in case you don't remember what you wrote here it is: I'm so sick of these "mexican gangs" taking away all these lives.... Not to mention the harrasment on the younger generation. The shooting are taking place are equal. It isn't just a "mexican" problem. Too bad your message came across that way.

1st off i wanna say rest in peace to my bro//cuhzo drex aka badnewz. drex wasnt a badd kidd nor had anything to do with "NHP". he was a mature young man that helped alot of people. if yall knew drex lyke how me and his close friends and family did,, you'll know what kind of guy he was towards us. Drex was just in the wrong area the wrong time and got shot for the wrong reason and some gang he wasnt apart of. ima miss drex and i think to ever had him in the dreams he's tryna tell us something. because i just recently had 1 about him and woke up with tears in my eyes. May 20, 2010 at 4:11 p.m.

Sad thing about this is, there are two conflicting accounts. A few people are saying this is a "tit-for-tat" shooting regarding Inglewood 13 and Neighborhood Piru...
Others are saying this young man wasnʻt a banger, just an innocent victim. Lets hope thats the case BUT I highly doubt that. I read that NHP did a memorial dedicated to this young man and people are calling him "Drex" and "Bad-Newz"? If so, this is heartbreaking. Nicknames are more often than not, associated with gangs. And does anyone know if the suspects are Mexican? I truly hope this is not a racial incident, we do not need more blood spilled between these two groups. But if so, this is the path gangs lead too. Death or prison. Pick your poison.

— Citizen X

May 24, 2010 at 11:50 a.m.

— ,,, ... We will (and have done so)harshly condemn any white or asian gangsters who die in LA County.

But ocnsidering the vast number of gang related homicides are commited by Black or Latino's then its only logical, thats what we end up commenting on.

Drex was not a GANG MEMBER!!! All we can do is live, love, and learn. They don't know him!
And what you said is true. He was not a gang member.
A gang member that goes to church, sings in the choir, finished high school, enrolled in college for nursing, and thinking about the military, never been arrested, was not on drugs and worked a job til death, these things I know. That is the funniest gang member I ever saw???????????
He was always very polite and mannerable. His dad's side may have possible gang affiliation? I really don't know them so I hate to comment on their lifestyles. People Can t help who they are related to.
And it is funny his NAME is DREXLER not dexter, so you don't know him.

Reading some of these comments it's evident to me that some of you didn't know my son!. For the record "my son was NOT a gangbanger!, I can't deny the fact that he knew some gang members but I can confirm that he wasn't a member of any gang, he was a high school graduate attending community college. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and paid the price with his life!. I appreciate all of the kind word spoken in the memory of my son thank you so much!. As for those of you posting and didn't know him or what the hell your talking about!. Know that my son was just honored @ his church and had the youth scholarship for 2010-2011 dedicated to his memory!. My son wasn't a gang member!.

This was the first Christmas for my brother without his son here with him, and I must say that it was a hard and emotional day for him. When will all of this senseless crime stop?. Our youth are leaving this world much too prematurely. I miss my nephew more than words could ever express. We as responsible adults should adopt "each one reach one" and see if WE can't bring an end to this or at least TRY!!!. I miss him so much...

I miss you so much words can not express, just the other day I felt your spirit so strongly present and I just began to talk to you and although I must say that it was "VERY" emotional for me I really enjoyed your visit. I love you now and forever my son rest in peace until we meet again.

Although there has been an award offered for information in the murder of my son, to date there has been no information received in leading to an arrest. The person that shot my son WASN'T alone there fore someone out there knows what happened and can help. search your soul and do the right thing.

I love you Drex,
Dad.
