Eduardo Rodriguez

Eduardo Rodriguez, a 14-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the 1600 block of East 53rd Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Several assailants approached a home Rodriguez was in about 9 p.m. and fired through the front door, said Sgt. Dina Zapalski, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

Eduardo was struck in his upper body and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Zapalski said the assailants are believed to be male, but there was no further information on their identities. Although investigators believe the victim had no ties to gangs, one of his male family members does, she said, and the shooting is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

It appears the suspect or suspects “intended to shoot an unknown person inside the residence,” police said in a statement. “All possible motives are being investigated.”

“This is not an area where you would suspect gang-related activity; it’s a residential area,” Zapalski said, adding that detectives “don’t have a lot of good information at this time.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Long Beach police homicide detectives at (562) 570-7244. To send an anonymous tip via text or email go to www.longbeach.gov/police.

Six reader comments about Eduardo Rodriguez

This is the young kid who's Mother was grief stricken as news agencies interviewed her concerning the tragic death of her son.To see the pain and hurt in her eyes really moved me,she stated that he wasn't a gangmember or affiliated,he was simply targeted for no apparent reason.I got to see Eduardo's photo in the news segment, and he looked so innocent and full of life.My sincere condolences to all who loved Eduardo,he's resting now..now the only thing to do is to catch the coldblooded killer! Paz & Amor

— Anthony R., family members are the last person to rust, regarding their loved ones being in gangs.

Sad but true.

HE might not have been a gang member, but someone in his family sure was. What these gang members don't realize, is that when they join a gang, so does the whole family and anyone close to them. If retaliation is sought against the gang member, it includes friends and family! Sad.

This is a shame that we have such lame people to hurt an innocent child like this!! One thing is for sure, the innocent ones are always the ones to be hurt or killed in these situations!!! One thing is for sure, these idiots took a life, they have no right to do so. God is powerful and sees it all!! Best part what comes around goes around and Karma is Right around the corner @ssho!!
