Francisco Martinez, 24

Died July 17, 2011

Francisco Martinez, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, July 17, in the 7800 block of Lemp Avenue in Sun Valley, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officers responded to a call regarding a possible assault with a deadly weapon about 11:20 p.m., according to an LAPD news release.

When authorities arrived, they found Martinez and at least one other person shot, officials said. The two were taken to a hospital where Martinez was pronounced dead. The other victim was listed in critical condition.

During the investigation, detectives learned that Martinez was attending a party at a home with a couple of friends. At some point, a group of unknown people walked up, began fighting with Martinez and his friends, then shot at them, officials said.

Investigators believe the shooting was gang-related.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Foothill area Dets. Byers or Farell at (818) 834-3115. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

"Pain And Sorrow"

By: Roxane Faulkner

This life is filled with pain and sorrow,
I always wonder if I'll make it through tomorrow.
I don't know what I'm going to do,
I'm always missing you.

I think about the joy, laughter, and tears,
and try not to have any fears.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath,
But once again I start thinking about your death.

You told me you would only be gone a little while,
And told me to always keep on a smile.
But its been longer than a while,
How do you expect me to smile?

I know you will always be in my heart,
But it is slowly breaking apart.
I always loved having you near,
and now I wish you were here.
