George Cleggett Jr., 26

Died Dec. 9, 2011

George Cleggett Jr., a 26-year-old black man, was strangled Friday, Dec. 9, at the Men's Central Jail in the 400 block of Bauchet Street in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Cleggett was found at 12:58 p.m. on the floor of a two-man cell by sheriff's deputies conducting hourly security checks. The victim was not breathing, and medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, according to officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Mary Leef said the investigation into any potential motive or suspect is continuing.

The inmate, who was being held on a murder charge, was alone when he was discovered, authorities said.

The Times has contacted investigators to obtain additional information about the case and will post an update as soon as possible.

Anyone with details about the death is asked to contact the sheriff’s homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Yes, the L.A. County jail is in Chinatown. It is within downtown, but considered its own district.

I never met George in person, but, he did take someone away from me and my family that we will never get over are understand why..that person was my brother Premium Fortenberry. My family and I were looking forward to justice being served, but I guess n a sense it has.

Isn't it ironic how this guy killed someone....and now he's been murdered [his] family wants justice [and people are saying he was a good guy].

The way of the universe is a funny thing, Meck looks like you were right.

George was under the influence of drugs before he was arrested...his mind wasn't right at all when he first came in. He was about to get out for time served for his next trial and now this happened. Curious to know who he pissed of enough to strangle him....

I think we should take a moment and read Matthew 7: 1-5. We are ALL sinners, therefore we should not pass judgement on ANYONE.

big boi get the facts before making comments.... why did he hide the body and try to leave another state to avoid go to jail again.. what fact you have????? this is another fact you don't have...geogre attacked the guy in the cell so it was self defense..so it look like justice was give back to him and the family..for beating up a old man... jail house laws.you don't beat old people to death at the age of 23 and think your going to get away with it good job inmate one less lowlife
