Died April 2, 2010 at 3:00 a.m.

Gerald Ramirez, a 29-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, April 2, in the 11700 block of Smith Avenue in Santa Fe Springs, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

In a statement from the Whittier Police Department, authorities said early Friday morning, about 2:25 a.m., officers responded to a call of a man with a gunshot wound inside a converted garage. When police arrived, they found Ramirez and pronounced him dead at the scene.

After the incident, Whittier police detectives began an investigation and were able to identify the assailant who shot Ramirez as Gerald Luis Gonzales, a 28-year-old Latino.

Friday afternoon, about 3:30 p.m., police were alerted to a suspicious person in the area near Pioneer Boulevard and Alburtis Avenue. Officers located the subject, who matched the description of Gonzales, running along the railroad track on Los Nietos Road. A foot pursuit ensued and Gonzales was taken into custody where he was booked on suspicion of murder.

According to the sheriff inmate information site, Gonzales is currently being held at the Whittier Jail.
