Ismael Lopez, 29 [Updated]

Died Aug. 26, 2011

Ismael Lopez, a 29-year-old Latino, was fatally shot by Long Beach police Friday, Aug. 26, near Long Beach Boulevard and 10th Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Police were dispatched to an "unknown trouble" call about 8 p.m., according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.

When the initial officer arrived in the area, he was informed by the radio dispatcher about a possible gang-related fight nearby involving several men at Superior Market, officials said. The dispatcher said a person had been shot in the stomach.

The officer drove to the market's parking lot and was directed by witnesses toward a Honda, police said. As the officer approached, he saw two males walking toward the car. The men then saw police and began to run from the area.

At that point, several officers began to chase after the men. Officials said during the pursuit, "the actions of one of the suspects caused one of the pursuing officers to fear for his safety and/or the safety of the other officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred."

One of the men was shot in the torso, police said. Paramedics were called and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He has since been identified by officials as Ismael Lopez.

The Long Beach Police Department and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office are conducting an investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

Two reader comments about Ismael Lopez

I see many killings by cops of persons with mental issues. It also seems that cops should be trained to shoot so not to kill but to wound a person. If needed more pistol shooting training must be conducted. Another type of weapon such a low power shotgun pellet style pistol or short rife would would and stop most persons without killing them.

"the actions of one of the suspects caused one of the pursuing officers to fear for his safety" the classic excuse to take someones life away and get away with it!
