Ismael Villegas, 21

Died June 22, 2011 at 3:53 p.m.

Ismael Villegas, a 21-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Wednesday, June 22, in the 5800 block of South 2nd Avenue in Hyde Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Villegas and his girlfriend were walking in an alley about 2:20 p.m., when a man described by witnesses as a Latino in his 20s walked up, asked Villegas his gang affiliation and shot him several times, according to an LAPD news release.

After the shooting, the gunman ran to a parked car and drove away, police said. The car was described as a dark-colored sport utility vehicle with a female passenger who was between the ages of 18 to 23.

The victim was taken to a hospital  but dies less than an hour after the shooting, coroner’s records show.

Anyone with information about the death of Ismael Villegas is asked to call Criminal Gang/Homicide Division, Dets. John Ferreria and Myra Kellum at (213) 485-1383. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800) 222-8477.

Rest In Peace little nephew. You are in a better place now, all them cowards out there; use your fists and fight like men. Any coward can pull a trigger, that just shows how weak u are n how scared u punks are.

This is so ridiculous. This is a tragedy. Latino and African Americans have to deal with this type of senseless death or threat of death on a daily basis. There is no right answer to the question where are you from. These Cowards are going to shoot at you no matter what you say. Villegas Family Know that I am praying that the Lord will Comfort you during this time and that he will grant you His Peace.

Mexicans act so proud and wave their flags. Why do they kill each other and not value other mexicans?

We are proud. But we should be proud of the 'good' things we accomplish. However, envy between us is a major flaw towards our progression in society. This particular case is gang-related though, and when that happens, everything flies out the window: race, morals, values, etc. (just my opinion) :-)

I pray that the burden of the pain gets easier with time for Ismael's family. Even though there is nothing that can take the pain away, please let us pray as children of God that they are blessed and find confort in knowing that their son is with God now. Let's pray that his killer is caught and justice served. God Bless Ismael and God Bless his family and God Bless all reading this.
