Jackie Hoang, 29

Died July 23, 2011

Jackie Hoang, a 29-year-old Asian man, died Saturday, July 23, after he was shot in the 300 block of Alameda Street in downtown Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officials said a man wearing a ski mask walked into a nightclub courtyard about 1:30 a.m., barked out a short phrase and started shooting. Two men, one of them later identified as Hoang, were smoking when they were hit.

It appeared they were the apparent targets, said LAPD Capt. Paul Vernon. Both fell from multiple gunshot wounds and crawled into the club.

Vernon said the shooter ran back to Alameda, then north toward 3rd Street.

Authorities were called and the two victims were taken to a hospital, where Hoang died. The other man, whose name has not been released, remains in critical condition.

Officials said they are looking for the shooter, whom they described as being about 5 feet 6, of medium build, and last seen “wearing a small, beige fedora hat on top of a ski mask over his face, a dark flannel shirt and jeans.”

"There's a number of people out there who do know who did this," Vernon said. "We'd hope they would come forward right away."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Central homicide Det. Al Marengo at (213) 972-1249. Anonymous tips can be called into Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
