Valerie Camacho, 6 [Updated]

Died May 14, 2010 at 1:49 p.m.

Valerie Camacho, a 6-year-old girl initially identified by the coroner as Jane Doe #30, died Friday, May 14, in the 6900 block of Remmet Avenue in Canoga Park, according to Los Angeles police.

Valerie's name had been withheld until coroner's investigators could speak with her father, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

Los Angeles firefighters received a report of a stabbing about 1:15 p.m. and found the bodies of Martha Carmona, a 21-year-old Latina, and her daughter, Valerie, authorities said.

Carmona and the girl were pronounced dead at the scene, said LAPD Officer Gregory Baek. "Each had knife wounds," Baek said.

Police said Friday night that after interviewing the husband, the case remains wide open. No suspect or motive has been determined so far in the killings.

[Update Jan. 6: Martha Carmona's uncle, Manuel Carmona, was arrested at his home on July 6 and later charged with two counts of murder.

He is believed to have killed Martha and her daughter Valerie.

Manuel Carmona, a 51-year-old Latino, is currently being held at the Men's Central Jail in downtown. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2011 at the Van Nuys Municipal Court.]

Three reader comments about Valerie Camacho

If I recall correctly. Valerie Camacho attended school with my young daughter. I lived across from the lil school in front of their home where they lived. I recall several times seeing the two hand in hand walking to the school. I recently moved out of the area just about 2 weeks before the slayings. I prayed that they would catch the monster who did this. Finally the two can rest in peace. Their families can be somewhat at peace. Unfortunatley for a family member to do such a horrific act upon a child and its mother, the hell that awaits him can be assured. That area of Canoga Park has a bad rap for previous gang problems never murder between family. Its truly sad to see the community tarnished by this act. I lived in Canoga Park for 4 years and never had any problems or heard of anything like this. Thank God they caught the guy who did this.
