Jason Valdez-Perez

Jason Valdez-Perez, 17, was shot once in the head east of 759 E. 109th Street in Watts at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

An 18-year-old companion who was with him at the time was wounded in the shooting but survived. The suspect, a lone black man or youth, fled north on McKinley. Jason's friend was treated and released.

Jason, six-foot-one with an easy smile, was a Locke High School senior about to graduate. He loved animals, and wanted to be a veterinarian, said friends and family members, gathered to grieve at his home four days after his killing, Jason's pet Chihuahua padding around their feet aimlessly. He was the middle child of three, and had no gang ties, said his uncle Raul Perez. "An innocent face," his uncle said. He was randomly targeted—happened to be standing outside when the attacker struck, detectives said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dets. Sam Marullo or Nathan Kouri at (213) 485-4341.

Such a tragedy. I hope they have caught the animal responsible for this young man's death. Can LA Times or the family please update us on the status of the investigation. My deepest condolences. Looks like a very nice young man. :(

Jason was my cousin. There will be no one to take his place. He was an honest great person. He was always the one to do the right thing. He was not related to any gangs or crews. I know for a fact that this was a random attack because anyone who knew Jason wouldve never intended or had any reason to hurt him.

"Miss You So"

By: Vivien Hodgkinson

Today I gave you roses
I gave you seventeen,
one red rose for every year
that you shared with me.
as I placed them on your grave
my tears fell silently,
for the man I truly loved
who is now just a memory.
I know that those roses
will slowly wither away,
but a memory so precious
with me will always stay.
It will never ease the sadness
or the pain I've come to know,
for no matter how much time
goes by,
I will always miss you so.

I can't remember a time when Jason was not smiling. His joy was contagious, and he definitely brightened everyone's day. It's a shame for people like him to be taken away from the world. Rest in paradise.

Its 3:20am and I randomly thought of my cousin..
All I can think about are the fun times we had playing pool in the garage. He was a dam good pool player. The family bbq are also great memories. Ostrich skin shoes, belts and jackets...
He was the one who showed me how to sport the look. He was a shining star...now he flies above above and beyond them. Rest in peace and paradise cuz.
