Jazmyne Eng, 40 [Updated]

Died Jan. 4, 2012

Jazmyne Eng, a 40-year-old Asian woman, was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies Wednesday, Jan. 4, in the 9300 block of East Valley Boulevard in Rosemead, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Eng appeared to be mentally ill as she held a hammer and threatened to strike people outside a mental health clinic Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies responded to the area and attempted to talk Eng into putting down the hammer, but she did not respond to their orders, officials said.

They then tried to subdue her by stunning her with a Taser, but that did not stop her, officials said. She advanced toward the deputies, holding the hammer above her head when a deputy fired two rounds, the Sheriff's Department said.

Eng was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner's records show she suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and left hand.

[Update Jan. 17: Woman shot by deputy not Tasered first, coroner says]

Anyone with additional information about the shooting is asked to contact the sheriff's homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500. Tipsters who would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800) 222-8477.

Meck U have got to be kidding me. Two well trained highly paid professionals could not do anything but shoot this lady to control her. At a mental health clinic no doubt. "The taser had no effect" very hard to believe. People when U see the cops coming puts your hands up and do not move. If you do, the responding law enforcement agency will use you for target practice. Ridiculous. God bless this lady.

Meck, did you know PCP is a drug NOT consumed like it used to be in the 80s? In fact, is rare nowadays.

Even a small Asian women can kill a person with a hammer. I think the cops did what needed to be done.

It's been irritating me how people are assuming things along the lines of"It's an Asian woman, she's probably small and w eak". This leads me to assume that if she another race, then it would suddenly be okay to shoot her then? Or if she had been another race, would anyone even say she's "easy to take down"?
I'm not saying what the cops did was right or wrong, but in regards to stereotyping and race, this has been irritating me.

— Meck you sound just like cops, "high on pcp" is the classic answer for killing a civilian. Why are LETHAL shots always the norm, could'nt they shoot her in the arm, leg or butt? This society is crazy and the cops are no better than the rest of us!

"could'nt they shoot her in the arm, leg or butt?"
I've got a better idea. Why don't they paint a target on her left pinky and shoot off her nail?
You schmuck! You've been watching too many movies. Come back when you make an intelligent comment, Einstein.

It amazes me that everyone always has an opinion when it comes to someone being shot or killed by police officers....Now there are many cases that may be looked at as overly aggressive officers and the type of force that they use but until you are faced with these similar situations you shouldn't second guess how an officer responded to a particular case....As a former parole officer I was faced with similar situations and had to make quick decisions that determined whether I went home at the end of my shift or not....In a heated moment one is not thinking about whether to shoot another in the leg arm or chest....the thought is to subdue the threat with whatever force is necessary...It's sad that someone has to lose their life but I want to go home to my family at days end and the perp isnt thinking about my well being...so before you go judging these peace officers make sure you think from both sides of it...If it was you or your loved ones on the job you would want them to make the decision that is best fo both them and the community...

It is a tragedy whenever anyone is killed by a police officer. Should a police officer take the chance to disarm the women? What if he slips and catches a hammer to the head? Would he or his family be called heros, or would he be accused of not handling a deadly situation as taught in the handbook? The police got that job because they're are intelligent people who want to go home at night, not because they're superheroes who take chances with their lives however slim they're are. It is a tragedy but if you chase a police officer with a hammer, expect to die.
