Jeovany Mendoza, 18

Died Dec. 1, 2012

Jeovany Mendoza, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by police Saturday, Dec. 1, in the 14600 block of Saticoy Street in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. after officers responded to a 911 call about an assault with a deadly weapon, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

When the officers arrived, sources said, Mendoza was holding a knife to a woman's throat. He refused to drop the knife after being ordered to do so by officers, at least one of whom opened fire.

Mendoza was fatally shot in the face, coroner's records show.

No officers were hurt in the confrontation, according to the sources who said the investigation was still unfolding.

Anyone with additional information about the shooting is asked to contact the LAPD at (877) 275-5273. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

— ? .... because he had a knife to the throat of a victim. He had to be stopped immediatly before he slit her throat.

Good shooting by the officer. That woman is still alive because of his marksmanship.

Are you kidding me? Did you read the article? He had a knife at the woman's throat. Think he could still use it if he was just wounded? Instead of blaming the cops, maybe you should question your homie punk criminal's actions that led him to the situation.

— syscom3, you are inconsistent with some of your posting when it comes to police officer involved shootings. You always claim this is not hollywood and cops are not able to shoot a suspect on an arm or leg, but yet in this incident you compliment the cop for shooting the suspect in the face.

If the suspect was holding the woman with a knife to her throat, facing the officer(s), the woman would be between the suspect and police… a human shield. This doesn’t leave much of the suspect open to a non-lethal shot.

This is insane. Why didn't they try telling him jokes first? (Laughing people susually don't stab other people). Or maybe they could have thrown money on the ground and disarmed him when he went to pick it up. That's the problem with cops, they always shoot first. It's because they are lazy. It's easier to shoot someone instead of using other methods.

The police did the right thing, they saw a threat and took action, it's a shame the victim was too stupid to know you never bring a knife to a gun fight.

I think the bad jokes the suspect heard from the police is what made this guy snap, I doubt the police had any money on them because they spend it all on donuts, so the only choice the police had was to shoot first ask questions later.

— James, I would be interested hearing your thoughts if it was one of your love ones who got killed by these cops. I'm certain you will be outrage just like many families of countless victims that are executed by cops.

It seems you have a hard time with reading comprehension. The article clearly states the suspect (now "victim") was a threat to public safety by threatening a female with a knife to the throat. Im sure the family of the female is greatful.

— jones, I understood the article and by no means do I support what the deceased did at all. I honestly don't believe any woman is worth a man's freedom, but hey everybody is different. Nonetheless, nowadays it seems cops are only train to pull the trigger. They kill the suspect first and ask questions later. I disagree with this tactic because the suspect is a human being and has love ones. I'm sure there's gotta be a way to shoot at the suspect with something to put him down but that is not lethal. But those like yourself who don't care for human life and don't have a clue about mental illness folks don't care.

For those who have seen many posts challenging incompetent cops who kill many suspects who are unarmed or get shot in the back while running away from cops, know my postings have caught up to me. I'm now constantly being harrased by police and I fear for my safety. Don't be surprised if get killed by law enforcement, but one thing that I want you to know is that I don't carry any weapons and I'm not the type of person who will resist arrest. I have a clean background record and drug free. So if you read I was threat I hope you realize you can NOT always believe police statements and that goes for those who don't agree with my view.

— James, I agree with Richie because when I got pulled over for going over the speed limit by 4 mph I was able to get away with it by throwing a box of donuts out my window.

All in here are hypocrite idiots. 99% of you don't have a idea what it is to be a cop. So all you that are saying they should have never taken that shot. Ask this to your self.
What if that victim that had a knife pointing at her throat was your mom, sister, daughter, aunt, etc....
Would you think the same, would you like the cop to take a shot at the arm or legs? So the suspect gets shot in the leg or arm. He still has the chance to use his knife now. On the way down he decides to slit the victims throat. Great job, now right. Now the suspect it's living, while the victim is dead. Now back to the question. How would you feel if that victim was a love one of yours?
Some of you idiots need to think with your head and not your ass....

Jag, this is not a case of shoot first ask questions later. the cops came upon a guy with a knife to a womans throat. what could possibly be asked in this case? what was being misinterpretted by the cops? it was pretty clear cut. they did what they had to do.
as for shooting him in the face, good. thats why they hit the range and qualify. cops are great shots. they can easily hit him in the leg, or arm, but what does that do? it does not stop the threat. besides, they arent trained to do that. they are trained to kill. body shot, or head shot. im ok with that. this lady is alive because of great markmenship. good going blue.

@ Jag,

You have some valid points, but it's not always cut and dry. Sure there are bad cops out there but the majority are servants of the law.

Let me make this clear to all who are clouded...Cops are trained to shoot to kill. They don't shoot to wound for several reasons, the main one being the perpetrator can still cause harm or even kill while wounded. They are trained to shoot center mass (the head and chest).

Perhaps this guy knew that and used this woman as a shield. I guarantee this guy had ample time to drop the knife, he decided his odds were better with his "shield". He was wrong, and lucky for her, this cop was a good shot.

Here's an interesting article that clarifies:

mightymike33tm3, I'm aware of the cops shoot to kill and I believe is a good tactic when the suspect is INDEED a threat. However, there are many suspects gown down by cops who are unarmed and shot in the back. In other instances, cops shoot a suspect because "it appeared" that the suspect was "reaching" at his waistband. That to me is not a threat, but rather a jump to conclusions to take a life away. In these cases, these incompetent cops should be held responsible and sent to jail.
