Jesse Muro, 15 [Updated]

Died Aug. 10, 2010

Jesse Muro, a 15-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, Aug. 10, in the 1100 block of 117th Street in Athens, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Muro was shot about 1:30 p.m. and died 20 minutes later at the scene.

It appears the shooting was gang-related, Winter said.

The Times has contacted investigators to get more information about the shooting and will provide details as they become available.

[Update August 18: Sheriff's homicide detective Dan McElderry, who is handling the investigation, said there have been no arrests made in connection with the case and investigators do not have a description of the assailant.

McAlderry said although Muro had no known gang affiliation, he believes the teenager was targeted by gang members. Anyone with information about the identity of the shooter or details about the incident is asked to contact Det. McAlderry at (323) 890-5500.]

I heard it was. His brothers were/are gang affiliated. Maybe the person who shot him thought he was too.

nobody who knows him cant say if he was in a gang too...dont matter...this part of town is a dump...it should be razed and turned into a real trash dump so...at least a land fill be worth more for the greater public than a shooting range full of black and latino people

I cannot believe the ignorance and stupidity of the previous racist comment made by "foclipz." Your mentality is a big part of the problem, we're talking about a horrible death of a teenage boy and you're making it political. I work at the middle school Jessie attended, and we are all deeply sorry for his loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I wouldn't say it's foclipz mentality that is the problem but the street mentality that doomed your middle school student.

— southxlos13 hk gk .... that looks like a gang moniker.

More pieces to the puzzle. The deceased was a wannabe gangster and got gunned down because of it.

It does not matter why Jesse was shot, what matters is that he is no longer here & that he or anyone for that matter does not deserve to die especially in such a gruesome way. I grew up with his mom & were childhood friends & I knew Jesse since he was born & all his siblings. Even though as adults we went our seperate ways I would never treat them any less than family & it saddened me that I just found out this week & was not there to support them. Jesse was a sweet kid with a lot of potential. I will remember Jesse as the shy little kid that would help his grandparents with the groceries, or that would follow his big brothers around in his bike or the little boy who would watch out for his little sister. He would always shy away & smile when I said hello to him & I always thought it was so cute that he was so bashful. So yes, maybe the neighborhood we grew up in is not the best & gang infested but that is no reason for anyone to pass judgement or make assumptions especially when a young life has been taken. It is in that same "hood" where we all learned about life, how to love one another & made everlasting & enduring friendships. Jesse is in heaven now & I am sure looking out for the ones he left behind. May God Bless Jesse's family in their time of pain & fill that void that Jesse left with love & blessings.
