Jody Heard, 35

Died July 19, 2010

Jody Heard, a 35-year-old black man, was fatally shot Monday, July 19, near 6th Street and Maple Avenue in downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

People in the area reported hearing at least one gunshot about 12:45 a.m., according to an LAPD news release.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Heard wounded on the sidewalk. Paramedics were called, and Heard was pronounced dead, police said.

He had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, according to coroner's records.

Witnesses said Heard and another man began fighting on the sidewalk, which may have led the shooting, police said.

“At first look, it appears the victim was the intended target,” LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon said. “The victim did not live or sleep on skid row.”

“Dozens of people sleep overnight on the sidewalk on this block every night,” Vernon said. “Overnight disputes often lead to violence, and people sleeping on the street are vulnerable. This is why we encourage everyone to use the shelters.”

Police said Heard had recently been paroled from prison on a narcotics conviction.

No arrests have been made in connection with his killing.

“We could use any information at all,” Vernon said. “There were dozens of people on the street when it happened, and word travels fast in skid row."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact LAPD Central Homicide Det. Patricia Hauck at (213) 842-0727. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).

Dear Jody as my childhood friend you were "Xray" I still can't believe that you are gone. The last conversation we had you were on your way to work. I want everyone to know that despite the things we did as children people do change as I did, and you were trying to do. I only wish you could have accomplished your goals.I can only thank god that we were able to spend time together eating and sharing old memories a few weeks prior to the day that you were called back home by God and your dear mother. We want you to know that we do have your picture displayed as you asked because I guess somehow you foresaw what was ahead. We can still hear your laugh, see your smile and we know that you are in heaven.

In response to the previous comments ...please read this my brother
.."And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”

Dear Jody,
I will always love you,you know that. I miss you every miniute i think about how you loved me. As for the morans who wished his death and are glad look in the mirror how could you face your self even thinking that someones death is a great thing. your day will come just as jodys did and you will stand before god and he will judge your sins also. I will always love jody no matter what. no one is free from sin. Jody is gone because he finished his mission on earth that god set before him not because of anything else. clean your own back yards before you talk about the garbage in anyone elses. !!!!!
