John Cervera, 35

Died Sept. 18, 2010 at 4:12 a.m.

John Cervera, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Sept. 18, in the 6000 block of Makee Avenue in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Cervera's family heard a gunshot then pounding on a rear house door about 2:44 a.m., said sheriff's homicide Det. Mark Lillienfeld , who is handling the investigation.

Authorities were called and Cervera was taken to St. Francis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:12 a.m., according to coroner's records. He had been shot in the chest.

Lillienfeld said an arrest has yet to be made in connection with the case. Investigators are still trying to determine the identity of the shooter, he said. Witnesses described an '80s white Chevrolet Astrovan fleeing the area after the shooting.

The incident is not believed to be gang-related, he said.

Anyone with information about Cervera's death is asked to contact Det. Lillienfeld or Troy Ewing at the sheriff's homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Not gang-related! In this area!! I used to own property around here. Everytime I collected rent, seems like something was going down in the neighborhood. With all the cops, and ambulances all over the place. Thank God I got rid of it.

the Florence-firestone area was once home to the hard working people working in la's booming industrial corridor along Alameda ...fast forward 48 years to present day and the hard working families are there still but this is one of the deadliest areas of la county hands down... combine it to green meadows ..florence... and watts to the south and you have one hell hole to live in... its just plain scary to me when i drive down streets such as hooper.....

— 562vert; 145 homicides within two miles of the address of this murder since Jan 2007. Extrapolate that out for 25 years and the number is staggering.

Allowing for a decline in the homicide rate, I figure 1500 - 1700 dead since 1985. These neighborhoods have so much blood on them, its completely like a war zone.

@562vert. I agree with every comment you post. I dont know of your age but it seems as though you and I have some of the same experiences. Like you I have been around and have seen a lot in Los Angeles but was always blessed to not become a statistic (in more than one way) I could go on and on... But like you said at the end of your comment "such as Hooper" Your right Hooper is jacked up from beginning to end...

syscom3- Most people that respond negatively to your comments most likely associate you to one or two comments they have seen from you. I however am familiar with all that you post on here and just want to say your comments and insight are very much appreciated and I always look for your take on this blog.

I feel the same way about 562vert; your on-the-ground perspective is quite fascinating. Keep up the good work, but be careful. As loathsome as Syscom can be, he's absolutely right that many of these areas are death zones controlled (with surprising effectiveness) by a small minority of nihilistic killers. I'd prefer not to see you end up on this report as a victim, 562vert.

First for those idiots that have nothing better to do than post on here trying to spread their ignoramus stereotypical idiotic views dis you know John ? No obviously not because if you would you would know that it was not gang related morons, just because a person lives in an area doesn't automatically make them a gangster . So Mr I have no life so I send what pathetic one I do posting my stupidity on any posts
That let me keep your stupid comments to your self especially when it has to do with you calling my friend a gagster at a moment when his life was taken from him for what ever the reason may have been. Let's if you like it when your mother passes away and I find that her obituary on the net and post on there not "whore related " ya right in that area please! "

I came across this article because I googled John's name. He was my boyfriend in 1995-1999. I was sad to learn of his death. If anyone could tell me where he is buried. I would love to pay my respects.
