John Evans, 38

Died Oct. 17, 2010

John Evans, a 38-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, Oct. 17, in the 1900 block of Pine Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Authorities received a call of "shots fired" about 12:06 a.m. and traced the shooting to Evans' death and the wounding of another teenage boy, according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.

Investigators learned that Evans was at a home with the juvenile and Elbert Haskins, a 26-year-old black man from Texas, when the three got into a verbal altercation. At one point, police allege, Haskins pulled out a gun and fired, striking Evans and the youth.

Following the shooting, authorities said, Haskins fled the area, while Evans was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

The second victim, a 16-year-old male from Long Beach, was also taken to a hospital. He did not suffer life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Soon after the incident, police arrested Haskins in connection with the shooting and booked him on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He is being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail.

Authorities said the reason for the dispute is still under investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Long Beach homicide Dets. David Rios and Hugo Cortes at (562) 570-7244.
