Jose Jimenez, 16

Died July 24, 2009 at 5:29 a.m.

Jose Jimenez, a 16-year-old white youth, was shot to death by a police officer at Meeker Avenue and Mildred Street in El Monte on July 24, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

The events that led to Jimenez's shooting began shortly before 4:30 a.m. when Baldwin Park officers followed a vehicle that had been reported stolen

The officers stopped the vehicle, and two people described as "male Hispanic adult passengers" got out and ran, according to the Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting. The female driver remained and was taken into custody.

One of the officers, who was not identified, chased the two. He told sheriff's investigators that he opened fire when one of the suspects reached for a gun. Jimenez, who lived in La Puente, did not fire any shots; the officer fired four, investigators said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene where Jimenez died, authorities said. The second suspect remained at large Friday night. Coroner's officials listed Jimenez's race as Caucasian in their report.

Nine reader comments about Jose Jimenez

Jose Ramon Jimenez was a great brother, father, and son. He was respectful and everybody loved him and we still do . He was my brother, the officer left a 1 year old baby that now has no father. But we will always take care of his son like if he was our own. At least that's what my brother would want . I Love You Jose Ramon Jimenez .You were always in my heart and always will be.

A great father is home with his kid at 4:30am, not riding around in a stolen car, running from the police and armed with a handgun. Don't blame the officer, blame your brother for making horrible decisions.

Stephanie, your brothers poor choices in his life left his child fatherless in his death. Place the blame firmly where it belongs.

— Stephanie ... so what is the story?

"And who are you to judge . Your not God". That's a common phrase used by gang enablers to justify their refusal to accept the obvious.

Stephanie I understand the pain, but this cycle of violent is so senseless and it keeps happening and happening over again and again. But it is the blind eye that family members have against their troubled youth members which causes this and is to blame. What the other people posted is true. Good kids do not end up at night in stolen cars. Family members should take some responsibiltes instead of supporting their troubled siblings.

First let me start by saying i think everyone needs to mind there own business cause none of you know what your talking about so let me school you. I dont know if you know this but we have alot of scandles police officers i dont care what a person does in life that doesnt give anyone exspecially a cop reason to shoot a 16 year old twice in the back and lie and say he was in fear of his life. So now what do you have to say not that i care what u think but all tell you that his son is loved and he is strong and when he grows up he will be a strong man because only the strong survive and i know this cause that baby is my grandson n he is three and a half my heart goes out to jose mom and sisters and brothers jose your son will always remember you all make sure of it rest in peace.......

— carmen, homicides are the business of the public. And the law abiding members of society have the absolute right to pass judgement on people who commits a crime.

I'm kind of flabbergasted about one thing .... if he had a one year old son at the age of 16; that means he fathered the child when he was 14 or 15. So young to bring a life into this world without the financial means or maturity needed to raise it.
