Died Sept. 25, 2010 at 12:59 a.m.
Jose Martinez, a 24-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, Sept. 25, in the 2900 block of Division Street on the boundary of Cypress Park and Glassell Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Jose Martinez and his brother Samuel Martinez, a 20-year-old Latino, were killed about 12:50 a.m. Both were shot once in the head and died at the scene, according to coroner's records.
Marvin Gonzalez, 19, also was shot and wounded and was in critical condition at a local hospital.
The men were heading to a liquor store when they were approached by several suspects who asked about their gang affiliations.
Apparently not satisfied with the answers, the suspects opened fire, said Sgt. Gregory Whortan of the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division.
Police said the victims were not gang members.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Northeast homicide detectives at (213) 847-4261. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

OMG...how sad 2 brothers killed at the same time. I feel so bad for their family especially their mom. May they have the strength to get through this tragedy.. And may they both R.I.P

I'm not saying any crime necessarily makes sense, but this type always seems so stupid to me, and I gotta believe it seems that way to most everyone. Two men from one family killed, for THAT-- being in some neighborhood and being asked about their gang-- if they even had one.

What really sucks is that as young Latino men we cannot go outside to enjoy ourselves without being a target by low lives or police harassment . We are either the rival gangsters or the suspects. The first thing that needs to stop is the stereotyping by people that don't even know who we are. We deserve or, better yet we have the right to walk, run, drive, live life without this non-sense. People saying we shouldn't be out this late, we are grown men (hard workers, brothers, sons, fathers) we are not going to be prisoners in our own neighborhood for anyone! Martinez Brothers Rest Peacefully!

The Avenues Gang runs deep through that area usually on the hunt for rivals. It's very easy to get mistaken for a rival especially if you hang out with the wrong people or place or simply for just dressing the part.

How come we can not walk down the street or drive down any street with out the fear of death? I am so sick of this. They are implementing a RICO violation of gangs in New York and trying to stop this mess. California-PLEASE, PLEASE STOP THIS SENSLESS KILLING OF INNOCENT VICTIMS!!
