Jose Roman, 18

Died Feb. 13, 2011

Jose Roman, an 18-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Sunday, Feb. 13, near West 1st and South Palos Verdes streets in San Pedro, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Roman, of San Pedro, was discovered just after 6 p.m. with gunshot wounds to his back. Deputies responding to reports of gunfire found him, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Paramedics took Roman to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives believe Roman was one of four men standing outside a residence on Palos Verdes when an argument broke out and escalated into a fistfight. Detectives believe the shooting was gang-related.

They were searching for a Latino with long curly hair in his mid-20s, last seen wearing a baggy white shirt, who is suspected of pulling a handgun and firing at Roman.

They also were looking for a Latino in his mid-20s last seen wearing a red shirt and suspected of fleeing the scene.

They ask that anyone with information call Harbor Area homicide Dets. Rodriguez or Batres at (310) 726-7886. Tipsters who'd like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Two reader comments about Jose Roman

It felt like it was just yesterday when he was just a kid who used to look up to me. Years later he's gone but in a better place. I heard about how his grandma is holding up and its just sad. My prayers go out to her and his family. R.I.P. Jose.
