Jose Varela, a 40-year-old Latino man, was fatally shot in the chest at 1124 S. McBride Ave about 9:32 p.m. in East Los Angeles near the Long Beach Freeway. According to Denise Fuchs of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His time of death was listed as 10:04 p.m., according to a coroner report.
