Joseph Martinez, a 49-year-old white man, was slashed in the cheek and neck and died Thursday, Aug. 13. Martinez was slashed in the 12000 block of South Figueroa Street in Harbor Gateway, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said a broken beer bottle was used to kill Martinez. The incident happened at 12:25 a.m., and Martinez was pronounced dead at a hospital at 1:14 a.m., Winter said.

Joseph Martinez was my uncle. He once saved my life by pulling me out of a burning car that had crashed on the freeway. I love and miss him very much. I will never forget him, but I know I will see him again one day in heaven. He was a believer in Jesus Christ and I pray that the person who did this is caught, is prosecuted, and finds salvation himself.
