Juan Monrroy, 33 [Updated]

Died Aug. 23, 2010 at 10:30 p.m.

Juan Monrroy, a 33-year-old Latino, died Monday, Aug. 23, eight days after he was shot in the 2100 block of West Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Monrroy had stopped at a strip mall and was using a payphone Aug. 15 at shortly before noon when he was shot, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

He was taken to County-USC Hospital where he remained on life support until he died on Aug. 23.

The Times has contacted investigators for more information about the case and will provide an update as soon as details become available.

[Updated at 12:40 p.m. Sept. 6: LAPD Rampart Det. Chris Linscomb, who is handling the investigation, said no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The assailant was described by witnesses as a white male, he said.
