Died Jan. 1, 2012

Jude Burns Jr., a 14-year-old black teenager, died Sunday, Jan. 1, after he was shot in the 1300 block of West 61st Street in Vermont-Slauson, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Jude was standing outside his home when someone shot him Saturday about 11:55 p.m., said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Rudy Alaniz.

"He stumbled inside the house, where he told his mother he had been shot," Alaniz said.

The teen was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, he said.

There was no suspect description and police were still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

"We don't know if it's gang-related or not," Alaniz said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the LAPD at (877) 527-3247. Tipsters who would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800) 222-8477.

I didn't know Jude but my heart feels your pain. Losing a loved one at such a young age is senseless and heartbreaking. I pray God gives you comfort and calms your pain. We have lost two family members, please know you do not cry alone. Thank the Lord Jude filled your heart with joy and laughter, remember his love and speak of him often keeping his smile alive.
