Julio Manuel Alcantar, 23

Died Oct. 1, 2012

Julio Manuel Alcantar, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Oct. 1, in the 1000 block of West 66th Street in Vermont-Slauson, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The 911 emergency system received calls regarding a shooting late Monday evening, said LAPD Criminal Gang and Homicide Det. Valento, who is handling the case.

When authorities arrived, they discovered three victims, including Alcantar, coroner's officials said. All three were taken to a hospital, where Alcantar was later pronounced dead.

Det. Valento said the other two victims were Alcantar’s brother and a longtime friend. They are expected to survive their injuries.

The incident is being investigated as a walk-up shooting, Valento said. The assailant was described as a male, possibly black.

It's believed the shooting was gang-related.

Anyone with information about the killing or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact Det. Valento or Garza at (213) 485-1383. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Julio was an amazing person, who believed in change for our community. I've know him since elementary school and was happy to hear that we would have both graduated next semester. He will never be forgotten

Question is was he involved in gangs?

My Brother Julio was not in a gang. He was a Senior at UCSD studying Ethnic Studies. He was a victim of the vicious cycle that has taken over South Los Angeles. Julio was born and raised in L.A. We beg anyone that has any tips on who killed my brother to come forward.

I'm really sorry to hear that, from my understanding the Mexican mafia in prisons gave Latino gangs the go ahead or Green Light to take out blacks. I think this is why Latino gangs are killing blacks and blacks are killing Latinos and some people are not even in gangs. Just to be clear this has noting to do with your brother, it's just general information, I'm sure your brother was a good guy.

Were is sycom3 wen u need him to state his opinion well first of all I don't know why they try to say no and sugar coat the situation Julio and his brother were gang members and to top it all off they were two Hispanics from a black gang...you can go to school and college or what ever that still doesn't mean you can't be gang banging after hours so the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth yes they were in a gang from a black gang you really think
somebody is just going to walk up to them and shoot them for no reason....sorry but NO..so don't try to sugarcoat it and let it be know the way it really is ....

To Juilo's brother and long time friend, I hope Juilo's death teaches you a lesson that gang banging doesn't get you anywhere, you can't do anything for Juilo anymore, but you guys can make a change forget the gang life it's not cool.

Echo what James said.

But, they'll probably get out of the hospital and show off their battle scars to their homies and get mad props for surviving... this time.

Does anyone think they aren't marked still? Get out of dodge while you can, erase the past and move forward elsewhere. Or will pride get in the way?

If you read what Piru wrote, it was pretty simple, matter of fact and wreaks of unfinished business. How can you get all that from one sentence? I didn't, I "got all that" from several years of reading this blog.

Leave the life, or die with your "pride".

The truth is family members lie for each other when 1. the family member is killed 2. the family member is facing time behind bars for some felony crime...Let's face it there are people out there who are innocently killed but I would say 65% of gang killings the intended taarget is hit....This guy was obviously a marked man and a gang member himself so he knew the consequences when he joined a gang...I know the family is grieving but if he was enrolled at UCSD what the hell was he doing in Los Angeles at the time?...School is in session as we speak so he should have been south up in SanDiego...Stop lying and face the facts...

And to think the first comment stated that he was amazing and "believed in change for our community."

What was the change? Free shopping days for ganstas? Gangsta parades? Maybe "gangsta studies" at the local community college?

If I was commenter no. 1, I would be at least a little embarrassed now.

Word on the streets is julio manuel alcantar was done like that because he was a "snitch", atleast his own "homies" is saying that. I dont know why he joined a gang . Especially when your born into a great circumstance of not living in the hood and given a chance to excel. apparently he screwed up so much and so bad it wasnt even an enemy that did this. Now another young man that didnt get to grow is gone

you sad uncompasstionate people sooo what this family is greiveing for their loved ones what do you know about loss you all dont know anything i see the post of people such as yourselves having no life and posting comments on how they deserved what they got stop lying. did my brother deserve what he got when a gang members killed him?? my brother passed away because some jerk descided to pick up a gun and take his life because he felt macho if it were up to me if you got enough balls to take a life you better be dammed some one is gonna take yours. its not our job to take lives we were give life for a reason who are we to be the judgers and executers in the end those who are killers will meet their makers one day and the ones who judge are just as bad my heart goes out to this family.. the wounds will heal in time just pray that they catch who ever was responsible for this

On purpose or on accident, his death shouldn't be a lesson to anyone. Gang member or not, it is better to not speak bad about a person, because I believe each and everyone of you have sinned(s). It best to keep your thoughts in your mouth, and never let it touch a sound.

Respect.

@ Piru,

I got a wolf, man. A pet wolf. His name is Blue. Every morning when I wake up, I smack that wolf and feed him cheese. He don't eat it. I try toast, nothing. I even tried to sell him tickets. Nothin.

But I never even thought to put it all together!!! If I put cheese on the toast, then sell him the tickets, according to Piru, he'll devour the toasty snack!!!

I'll give it a shot, 'cuz the streets don't lie! But, it doesn't say anything in the instructions about not smacking him. Not sure I could stop doing that.

So to recap... I'll wake up, put cheese on the toast, give ole Blue a sharp smack across his chops then sell him a couple tickets, and film the results!!! This is money! Wait, what kind of tickets? I know! I'll sell him plane tickets to Alaska, because I'm big on irony.

I'll slap a fat 411 on the wolf-cheese-toast tip, stat P! Noms?

— Meck
Nov. 15, 2012 at 8:26 a.m.

@ Meck,

Yeah, every once in awhile I digress!!!

@ Amaly,

How is it that there isn't a lesson to be learned here? There are 2 ways to look at it, if he was a gangster then you live by the sword... if he wasn't a gangster as some of his friends are claiming, he was either hanging around with them or in an area that's infested by them.

The two that survived have been given another chance to avoid this website. You don't see a lesson here? To me, that's mind-boggling. If it were me, I would do everything in my power to avoid the whole, wolf-ticket-cheese-toast caper that Piru is spitting.

But I really don't know much because I've never pulled a gun on anyone, struck fear in anyone, represented asphalt that doesn't belong to me nor hung around anyone who does. However, I'm not completely void of the option as I've had several chances to do so but chose otherwise.

The lesson here is "C-H-O-I-C-E"

It's important to remember one thing.
Just because someone dies, doesn't change the way they lived.
Sometimes the universe finds a way to self adjust.

Ok so it turns out that had something to do with this was the Street villains there is some conflict going on with the brims, bums (taggers) and Florencia 13 gangs against the 43rd street villians rollin 40 crips and feens (taggers) since they all live in the same areas they have taken sides due to family members being from 2 of the different gangs in the area being shot.I won't say names but it's out there drive around these neihborhoods and look at the graffitti and the recent arrests along with shootings they are at each others necks.

Dec. 9, 2012 at 9:51 p.m.

@Syscom3 - This time around everything you are saying makes no sense. You are completely wrong. Julio was and will always be a voice for the voiceless. How is it that no one cares? When the university he went to is going to have a ceremony in his honor? Young boys now a days are being killed just because of the area they grew up in, in this case he was in the street where he was born and raised! There was no need for these boys to watch their back.

People stating that his brother-in law sent someone to kill him how stupid is that- because of family issues that had occurred his family believes that he might have sent someone to kill him- that's insane. At the end of the day his Sister and her Son are the ones being affected the most. Nobody understands or thinks about her pain. His nephew lost his Uncle but at the end of the day lost his Father as well because now everyone believes his father had something to do with Julios death. I know Julio from school and I know his family pretty well. It is very sad that this occurred, 2 families are being affected Julios family and his Sisters Family. At the end of the day the little baby is being affected the most. We live in a society that is quick to blame and that has got to stop. You all need to stop for a second and really understand that this time around someones life was taken- but what can we all do to make things better for a family that is being broken apart little by little. my heart goes out to Gardo (Julios brother), and his family for everything that is happening.
