Julio Valdez, an 18-year-old Latino man, was fatally shot at 2823 N. Santa Fe Ave. in Compton about 4:13 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29. According to L.A. County sheriff's deputies, Valdez and another Latino man were standing in the parking lot of a liquor store when two or three black men approached them and began shooting.

Valdez was hit on the neck and died. A coroner's report listed his time of death as 4:28 p.m. The second man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The motive for the shooting is unknown, authorities said. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.
