Keenan Handy, 20 [Updated]
Died Jan. 7, 2011 at 2:15 p.m.
Keenan Handy, a 20-year-old black man, died Friday, Jan. 7, a day after he was shot in the 1300 block of South Long Beach Boulevard in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Handy was driving a car Jan. 6 about 10:14 p.m.
"That's when the car-to-car shooting occurred," Winter said.
Handy was taken to a hospital in Lynwood, where he died the next day at 2:15 p.m.
The shooting was gang-related, Winter said.
The Times has contacted investigators to obtain more information about the case and will provide additional details as soon as possible.
[Update Jan. 18: Sheriff homicide Det. Philip Guzman, who is handling the case, said investigators do not have a description of the assailant or the car.
Although Handy was not a gang member, Guzman said, he could have been mistaken for a member of the Southside gang and that may be why he was shot.
Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact Det. Guzman at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).]

It was like yesterday when I received that awfully dreaded call in the middle of the night..."Nooo, not Lil Keenan!" Its not just "another" black male killed, this one was OURS. Our neighbor, our brother, our nephew, our son, our cousin, our friend, our Lil Keenan. Chester Ave. will definitely miss waving to you as u bounced over the speed-bumps while passing through the neighborhood. Much love, the Watson Family.

Parents reading this, you know if your kids are hanging with the wrong crowd, you wash their clothes, see them daily ect. Check your kids hard, send them to boot camp, give them a good spanking... no child deserves NOT to be giving another chance, move out the area... do something to save your kids.

Keenan you will be missed by so many and although he lived in Compton he was not a product of his environment. He was a good kid who desreved every chance in the world to make something of his life. This was senseless and it angers me that some people have such little respect for human life. Our love and support go out to the Handy family.

What is really sad is people who earnestly try and avoid the negatism of a community often times end up being the victims themselves.... you can do all you can to stay away from the malice, the gang activity and even all the politics and still somehow still end up being the ones vandelized, herassed, beat up or even killed,,, this is the unfortunate reality for parents & children in this area who are trying to do the right things and teach their children the right way....

Heard the news and prayed it be a bad rumor!!! I remember watching all the handy's (my little cousin's) and little Keenan always kept me on my toes and gave me lots of laughs!!! Last time I saw him was at my little cousin Dj going away picnic and he came up and gave me a big hug and showed me all his tat2 I was amazed at how much he had grown up!!! Now everytime I think of him all I remember is his smile!!! It sadness my heart knowing that someone so heartless could take the life of someone's son/ grandson , brother, nephew, cousin and friend!!! But I know he's in a better place away from all the craziness this world has to offer!!! Praying for Keenan and Missy and the rest of the family this is so hard but not too hard for GOD!!

Never in my life would I think I will be writing this. I imagined hanging with Keenan until we grew old. Keenan was one of the best young men I ever knew. He wasnt like the rest in the area and he had a GREAT HEART. He was smart, funny, unique, REALLY CRAZY, and loving to be around. He inspired people to love and cherish life. Throughout my whole 9 years living next door to Keenan, I didnt regret any second. He was an addition to my family and we loved him so much. Almost every night he would come and have dinner with us or we would invite ourself to hang with him. I will miss every bit of him from his pranks and tattoos to his smile. Things arent the same since that day.He didnt deserve to go.. No more pranks, excessive eating, speaking the truth or crazy notions. Even though he is in a better place, I wish he was still here. Stay strong Keenan, Christel and the Handy family. We will see him again.

I know I'm late but this is my 1st time coming upon this page. 1st I wanna say to the editors or people responsible for calling this a "gang related" shooting, that this was anything but. Keenan was an innocent victim of violence and ignorance. I reminesce back to those days at grahams house, all of us, bunched on the couch talking crap and fighting over remotes. Me, keenan, josh, justin, rocky, kenneth, and too many others to name. I never envisioned that the paths our lives took us would go awry. Keenan was one of the most intellectually influenced person(s) I had the pleasure of growing up with. I love you bro.. I know you're fine with baybear and ur grandad. see u sooner than later
